    Default Botswana itinerary July 2021

    Hello fellow 4wdrivers !

we are currently planning a 1-month-trip to Botswana for July 2021 and need your advice about the itinerary.
Some context might help : we are french, our Landy is currently stored in Windhoek and we are quiet slow travellers Chobe/Savuti is not part of our itinerary as we went to Chobe a couple of years ago. The final destination of this trip is Joburg.

Here is the provisional itinerary, questions follow:

Day 3 : Maun to Khwai.
Is it possible to drive from Maun to Magotho within a day without rushing ? Or is it better to stop at South Camp ?

Day 12 : Maun to CKGR.
How long would it take to drive from Maun to Matswere Gate ? Which campsite could we reasonably aim at ?

    Day 13-16 : CKGR.
Are 4 days enough in CKGR ? Which itinerary within the CKGR would you recommend to maximize our chances to see brown hyenas ?

    Day 18-19 : Makgadikgadi.
Is it reasonable to plan a day from Khumaga to Njuca Hills and another day from Njuca Hills to Nxai Pan ? Generally speaking, in July, is it worth crossing Makgadikgadi using this way ? Or better stay around Khumaga ?

    Day 19-20 : Nxai Pan.
Which campsite would you recommend ? We thought one night each ?

Day 23-24 : from Francistown to Tuli Northern block.
Which road would you take to reach Tuli North ? And which stopover ?

The planning is somehow flexible - we could add 2-3 days.

Looking forward to your advices, though we don't post often we are browsing this forum every week and it has helped us a lot building our 3-month-trip last year through Zambia and Malawi (we'll post the trip report as soon as it's done).

    Thanks a lot !

    CÚline and Simon

Yes we came from Khumaga, shopped in Maun, and was at Magotho mid afternoon. It was November with longer days, but even mid-winter Maun to Magotho will be easy.

For very nice homely accommodation in Maun, give The Maun Garden Studio a try. See https://the-maun-garden-studio-holiday-home.booked.net/ , location 19░57'0.62"S 23░28'54.51"E

Not much happening on that road in July, give Njuca a mis, stay extra day at Khumaga, then take the road out to Phuduhudu and shortest route to Nxai Pan.

Hi Celine. I am going to try to answer most of your questions based on previous trips and info on various websites. I presume you will be driving a 4x4 vehicle without towing.

Day 3 : Maun to Khwai.
Is it possible to drive from Maun to Magotho within a day without rushing ? Or is it better to stop at South Camp ? You can do it easily if go directly from Maun to Maghoto. If you want to go via Moremi, I would suggest you sleep over in Moremi at North Gate

Day 12 : Maun to CKGR.
How long would it take to drive from Maun to Matswere Gate ? Which campsite could we reasonably aim at ? Depending on the condition of the road from Rakops to Matswere, it will take you around 4 to 6 hours from Maun to Matswere gate if you take the tar A3 and the B300 to Rakops and then the 40km to Matswere (250km total distance). We have once used a road running alongside the Vetenarian Fence via Makalambedi to Kuke Corner on Matswere and saved 80km and about an hour in time but do not know if it is still allowed and what the condition of the road is(

    Day 13-16 : CKGR.
Are 4 days enough in CKGR ? Which itinerary within the CKGR would you recommend to maximize our chances to see brown hyenas ? When is enough enough but I will say 4 days will give you and idea of the vastness and openness of this park. I would go for Sunday Pan Site 4 from which you can explore in all directions. If you can extend your stay in CKGR I will go for Passarge Valley Site 2 first for 3 days and then Sunday Pan for 3 days. You will be able to reach Passarge Valley Site 2 easily from Maun in one day if you start easily (06:00). The same goes for Sunday Pan to Khumaga.

The cam at Njuca Hils is not in operation anymore and to take a trip to it is on a very straight and boring 40km road where you do not see much. I would rather spend time alongst the Boteti river drining from the Khumaga camp

    Day 19-20 : Nxai Pan.
Which campsite would you recommend ? We thought one night each ? The campsite at Bains Baobab is magical with the baobabs silhouetted against the rising or setting sun. You can easily drive from there to the main camp and explore the animals at the waterhole

Day 23-24 : from Francistown to Tuli Northern block. Sorry, here I can not help
Which road would you take to reach Tuli North ? And which stopover ?

    Hi Mike,

thank you so much for your tips !
I have updated our plan according to your suggestions (except Maun Studio which is nice indeed, but we're looking for a campsite there). There are some other changes like, cutting one night in Tuli and adding a detour to Mabua - which has been on my mind for a long time. Also added 2 nights in CKGR as suggested by AndreTunie.

So here's the new itinerary, changes are in light yellow :

Thanks a lot AndreTunie for your detailed reply, it is very valuable indeed and we have included your suggestions in the planning
Btw you're right, we're in 4x4 (Defender 110 Hardtop) and not towing.

About the Francistown to Tuli leg, it seems this can be done in one day so that's good news for us, no need for a stopover.
