Default Chalenger / Wildernis 310 Alterations / Pimping

So this Wildernis 310 darkened my portals and did not want to leave again. I got it as a good deal so I had little to lose other than time and some materials.
First step was to lose the roof rack for now as well as the jerry can holders and of course give it a quick clean up.

Secondly we made some additional boxes on the sides above and next to the wheel arches. Sounds easy but my bending break has a problem in bending a pan with 300mm sides so off to the scrap heap for some sturdy steel and some welding. A 10 bottle jack and a couple of springs was all that was bought for the "machine" and I now have a 10T press/bender, it has already paid for itself.

I can go up to 50T as I have a spare 50T jack but for now the 10T works fine.
The boxes are bent from 1mm steel and welded on the seams. Getting a mig to weld 1mm and not burn it is a bit of a trickey one but doable. Worst is the sunburn If you don't wear your heavy jacket and in Dec that is not nice.
Cutting is done with a plasma cutter, it is neater and faster than any grinder.

When welding such thin metal one needs to be extra careful of expansion, the heat from the welding quickly distorts the seams and one has to weld in short little bits, cooling the work as you progress.

The side boxes was assembled and sprayed with a metal etch primer before getting an epoxy coat or 3.

The shocks as well as hinges and clamps of the lid was removed and the lid was sealed with sika and bolted shut. Do not need opening functionality of the lid as I have fitted a fridge slide as well as rear slide and back board

Of course there has to be electricals done to the trailer as well. Each compartment got its own LED strip with individual switch as well as hella plug for each compartment and a dedicated one for the fridge.
The board was one of the Jurgens boards that I had lying about that I had added extra fuse holders for th pump and main feed to the battery as well as an intelligent charger that will not cook my battery. The battery and board was mounted in the nose cone so as to leave the rest of the trailer for packing space.

I had one of those that I also did serious work on. The lack of side entry and the tentco tent was what made sell it. Those tentco tents are a lot of work! But it was really fun working on it.

Hi there, for those who are interested here are my latest additions to my wilderness 310.
I decided to take the time and do a bit of fabrication myself and build in a small kitchen and bedroom cupboard to make camping life a little more comfortable. I also went along and designed a couple stainless steel hinges for the bed to convert it from a double to a king so swambo, the kids and I can sleep comfortably.

Check it out if your interested.

The painted boxes was fitted and attention was shifted to the rear slide. These side boxes gives one a load of extra packing space, they are fully carpeted and one can just load your clothes.

A rear slide with 180kg slides was added to the back area and a 80l water tank was fitted just between the fridge slide and rear slide. A 12v pump put some pressure on the system.

Kitchen side got its own side box with a front runner fridge slide to make things smooth
Of course the caddies had to bling out the kitchen box

Next our attention went back to the roof rack, it was too high for my tent so the plasma cutter came out and we chopped a piece off. There is still the table slide underneath so one can fit a big trestle table, we fitted a lock for it

I had a spare Mini 1.5 x 1.5 x 1350 tent and this would just do wonders on this trailer so without too much drama it was fitted in such a way that the side boxes are fully accessible from inside without having to open zippers or flaps

    Wow, Henk.

I can see you had fun with this project. Thank you for sharing. This is wonderful!

Those side boxes give impressive amounts of extra space. Did the part you cut off the roof rack compensate for the weight of the boxes?

Mine at Pilanesberg a month ago, will be there again next weekend. Not great to see but I have added a fridge slide and DIY drawer to the back so if it rains I can still access it without getting wet. Table with basin clips onto the left wheel arch, second table is under the tent in the roof rack. I have a side box on the left for cooking but I would really like another one on the tent side to use for clothes, not having to pack and unpack bags and all that would be great.

Henk are you up for making a custom side box or know anyone who can for me?

No problem, tell me what and how you want it and I will make it happen for you.

@ Emmie, I would love to say that the cut off compensated for the weight of the boxes but that would be fooling myself. The boxes and water tanks as well as the electrickery added about 70 - 100 kg if I have to be realistic combine that wit the 75 kg of the tent ( had to weigh for air transport) and we have taken up a bit of the available load

How do you do the long bend on the long box?
Turn everything through 90 degrees and do it sequentially?

I also want to ask but it looks like you're right, turn it 90 degrees. Mine was build for 100 x 6mm mild steel flat to be bend 90 degrees, but I do have a few jigs, even bend 25x25x3mm square tubing. Something like this in picture.

Hi HenkA very nice job with all the alterations. Did you reinforce the mudguards to carry the additional weight. Taking that roof carrier off must have saved sum weight as well.

I cheated a bit I built a pan bender some time back and this invention works wonders an can bend up to 1.2m in length. On shallow pans up to 75mm side depth it does the job but if he pan/box is deep it can not get the main bar in to the pan, clearance is not enough.

Mike the Mugguards only took part of the weight the rest is bolted to the side of the main body with a spacer to clear the roof overhang, the bulk of the extra weight is carried by the main body.
The roof carrier was removed and the top open section cut off, the lower part was needed to get the roof height to 1350 height to accommodate the tent base height so the saving was 5kg at most
