Default KZN GTG Mlalazi/ Ongoye Forest 6-8 Nov 2020

After discussion with Marais and Heinz ( and scouting venues) we decided to hold our next GTG at Mlalazi/ Mtunzini, which I have found to be a lovely venue. A bit about the venue:

    https://www.sacampsites.co.za/Campin...azi-kzn-parks/

    https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...94#post4019594

We will be camping in the larger Nkwazi camp from the Friday and on Saturday do a day trip through the Ongoye Forest on the 4x4 trail, stopping halfway for a brunch and then heading back to Mlalazi once we have exited the northern grassland section.

On Saturday we will venture north and enter the Ongoye Forest from the south, drive the 4x4 trail and exit on the northern section and loop back to Mlalazi. Trail conditions I am unsure of currently, once myself and Gavin Fordham have done the recce I will advise.

A pic attached of the grasslands, a really wonderful part of Zululand Ongoye is.

Other activities planned I will update as and when, for now I have a cast iron ( flat bottom and potjie pot) cooking demo I want to do on the Saturday night, for those who might be interested.

EDIT 1: The camp can be contacted on 035 3401836 for further info and booking is done through central reservations on 033 8451000.

EDIT 2, 03/03/2020: There are 33 sites available in the Nkwazi Camp..The rate is R360 per day and includes three adults - even if only two PAX you still pay R360. So your weekend for two nights will cost R720.

EDIT3: 24/04/2020 Date has been changed to 6 to 8 November
EDIT 4: 3/09/2020 All systems go!

    Activities

    Friday evening
We are fortunate to have the ecologist who looks after Ongoye Forest willing to join us and share with us more about Ongoye, thank you Sharon!
Rickert ( Leeubok) who is also an ecologist put this together for us and will also share with us some details of the projects he is busy with in Ithala. Dankie Rickert!
I will do an intro to composition in photography also.

Fish braai for all- bring your salad or bun EDIT: As there is unsurety of the availability of fish due to poor weather and boats not fishing I might have to put this on hold so please cater as per normal for yourself. If I can wrangle something it will be a bonus then

    Saturday
Group 1 who will be doing the complete forest route will leave the campsite at 7am
Group 2 doing the roundtrip will leave at 9am and we are planning that the two groups meet each other on the western side of the reserve, where we will stop and have a quick brunch/ snack. Bring preprepared meals as we won't make fire or do anything on gas. From there we will head back to camp. All dependant of course how it is going with Group 1 in the forest.

When back at camp we have Rickert's presentation to look forward to, then a quick cast iron demo by myself and lastly the lucky draw prize giving.

PLEASE NOTE: As per normal, no alcohol allowed anywhere on the driving day. If you have a first aid kit please bring it along and an insect spray like Tabard or Peaceful Sleep for the grasslands.

There will be multiple fires going for cooking so bring wood with if you can. Mica in Mtunzini ( one of our sponsors) will have wood available for sale if required.

    Sunday
We pack up with long faces and head home

It would be great if you could make it Estee, in fact, it would be rather splendid.

Will advise closer to the date.
I am so happy to see this revival of activities in the kZN Region - big thanks to the organizers who take up time and effort to get these things going and successfully completed.
