Most of our Cape Town members know Leeuwenboschfontein guest farm and the 4x4 route. Leeuwenboschfontein have for the past few years also been host to star parties organised by astronomy enthusiasts.

Last year April we were given the opportunity to start an astronomical observatory on a piece of land on the farm. I joined forces with 3 three friends and the started work on the observatory. We officially opened our doors in November 2019. We have the following telescopes on site:

  • 16 inch GSO Dobsonian
  • 12 inch Skywatcher SCT
  • 8 inch Celestron SCT

A roll of roof observatory is under construction with roof and pier being added soon.

We operate the observatory on the same principal as the Cederberg Observatory. We are open two Saturdays a month (closest to third quarter and new Moon). We are however closed if the weather is not suitable for observing. We start the evening with a slide show, followed by a visual tour of the night sky and then move on to the telescopes.
