Default SAPS tracks foreign registered cars.

Today in the local eswatini times there is a report on how from January SAPS places a sticker with a QR code on your foreign registered car when you enter a border into SA.

They can track the car and see where it is at all time, if it exceeds 30 days in SA, SARS can go and confiscate it.

The article says police will be able to scan it at road blocks, even the gantries and get info that was registered by the owner when entering. It will also report if there are any fines outstanding.

if a foreign registered car is found without a sticker it gets confiscated.

its applicable to all foreign registered cars coming into SA.

Those that stay longer than 30 days legally are usually students from neighbouring countries.

Thiose that stay more than 30 usually do so illegally. Zimbabweans, Mozambicans etc etc etc

What about the student driving the mothers old car. Only coming home once a year ? Stellenbosch - Gaborone is a long way.

One issue are the 2nd hand Japanese cars sold for instance in Botswana. Cheap compared to prices we have to pay here. Many have plans how to buy them and use them here.

The same for students from Namibia, they are allowed to be here as long as they have a valid students visa.

Personally I have been working and resident in Swaziland for 5 years. Both my cars are still registered in SA with GP plates.

It used to be ok if I had a Road toll slip that one gets when entering a border into eswatini that was no older that 30 days to show at a Eswatini road block. Otherwise they could impound and only release once you paid the 15% VAT on the value of the car. We would inevitably border cross in 30days for shopping or visit in SA.

Recently it changed, I need now to get a temporary import permit from the local swazi tax authority getting permission to use my GP registered car in Eswatini. renewable even 6 months

Im sure you can also apply for a temporary import permit at SARS if you are planning to stay for more than 30 days- they will ask for the appropriate visa that in your foreign passport and issue a corresponding permit.

And so many of them totally disobeys traffic laws.
Them having a visa doesn’t entitle them to keep a nam registered car here for the same time.

Sounds like a good thing to me!

I would double check and confirm with SARS.

Remember that Home affairs and SARS are nor linked they have separate rules, just because you are legally allowed in the country for more that 30 days according to Home affairs- does not mean this policy is aligned with SARS and tariffs due on your foreign vehicle in SA.

I suppose if you have a proper itinerary and can prove that you are holidaying in SA, and will again leave on a specific date, you will be exempt. Best would be for someone in that situation, or tour operators, to contact SARS and confirm.

They will probably have to re-register them in SA and get local number plates etc.
    Will be costly though.

They are linked. I was never asked to produce my passport to prove more than 183 days out of SA for tax purposes when claiming the benefit. And you will see the SARS sign at immigration at any airport.

It is by time they did this. Students will have to make another plan. Drive on SA roads, then pay the license.

Butttt with all the other crap going on.... blag blah, will it be policed effectively.

Many cars with foreign plates so I think its a good thing.

I know a few people I have spoken to have their cars registered in Swaziland but work and reside in SA.

The reason I was told was so that they don't get Fines and the registration costs are less than half of ours.

In many countries tax office is not allowed to link to all kinds of existing databases. They have to collect the data on their own. ANC hired Swedish advisers in the beginning and those knew the problems. SARS has access to very many places. Maybe like STASI. They are adding links as needed.

Lucky for small people they are so busy with the big boys - for now. I thought SARS can ask 5 years back. Public Protector 9 YEARS - give everything.

SARS is likely behind this car business plus maybe car manufacturers/dealers. Like brand name owners are now pushing SARS and SAPS to raid illegal imports. Hitting several times in JHB and now in Durban. Cigarettes are coming, game auctions...

    Money is needed. Billions.

Temporary import permits. Typically up to 6 months or you have to pay the import duties/vat
