Why is it so hard Has it always been this way? Is it getting worse? The economy is in the toilet. Businesses can not afford to have crap customer service.

No, it was not always like this... except maybe for Cape Town... and Durban...

I think it is not actually Dell. It is a local company. For some reason Dell pulled out. I buy from online supplier and no issues. I just now wanted to add 5th year to one laptop on site repair and 4th year for an other. This kind of order is directly to Dell call center somewhere far away place. Response was immediate. It turned out that extension is only possible couple months before expiry of the running contract so I could not get that extension to 4 years. I received TWO e mails apologizing as they first said it is possible. I replied that I was very happy with the result.

Sooo it is really great if you offer good service - as the economy tanks - you are the last man standing! So simple but people make it so difficult.

I would be petrified trying to make a living in India/ China or any of those Asian countries as I would be the one sleeping in the container with the machines.

The US maybe in with a chance.

I come from the East Rand, Boksburg. Say what you want about it, things got done. I'm not sure if it's because the contractors were scared to get beat up if they don't perform, or maybe because it's centralized mini business hub. Contractors quoted, pitched up, got it done, no questions asked. Always.

Moved to Pretoria almost 2 years ago, my tongue has rash from licking. Here it seems it's a privilege if someone does something for someone else.

Aaaah, man, this is why I love staying out in the 'kontrei'... Us country bumpkins seem to have it a lot better.

I have yet to ask for a quote here, and not get one. I have never had someone stand me up when he's supposed to be there.

I will admit, I've had some issues before, but it turned out the guy who quoted me to erect a fence, was too busy on a big job himself, and subcontracted. The subcontractor had lots of stories and excuses, but he was busy going under with debt and literally didn't have operating capital to see him through...

One of our other members here, grew up in our platteland dorp, but is currently staying and working in the big CT. He often gets things done here as he finds service and work ethics to be better than in the city...

Unintended, but my previous post probably came over as facetious and sarcastic. Apologies.

Marc, ain't got nothing to do with government or the 'mericans, it is just plain slapgatgeid as it is called in Afrikaans.

The measure of one's character is what you would do when no one is watching and that only one's self is responsible for.

For sure this type of 'I will call you back with a quote' disease goes way beyond government and has been around for years and is found in all walks of life and occupations.

And when you DO complain, they just ignore you....had a spat with a Vodacom 'agent' recently who was not only rude, but plain stupid and cut me off in mid-sentence when she could not answer my questions, Well Vodacom claims to record all calls so I sent an e-mail to their 'customer service', with date & time, requesting that they replay this conversation please, and act on it. do you think they even acknowledged my request? Not on your life!

It is unfortunately a sad situation.

With my electronics projects, I need to buy quite ab it of stock, and the shocking truth is that I can consistently buy a basket of components and have it delivered to my door from anywhere around the world - China, America, Europe etc - sooner and more reliably than what most local companies can do.

And it is a pity, because I believe in supporting local guys.

But... If I have deadline to make, I have no option. I simply cannot trust the local oaks to be consistent with their promises of stock and delivery times.
