Default Malawi northern border information & road condition wanted.

    Hi

I want to go from Kapishya Hot Springs to the northern part of Lake Malawi. My first thought is to enter Malawi at Chitipa. From searching on this forum it appears that I need to clear Zambia Immigration at Isoka first. It would also seem that the smaller border posts do not sell Third Party Insurance and this then has to be bought in Mzuzu. If I have to go to go to Mzuzu first then I think entering Malawi at Katumbi would be better. Tracks4Africa paper map shows a border post at Muyombe in Zambia. This border post is not mentioned in any post that I have seen. Would I still have to clear Immigration in Isoka?

In a previous post the OP said that it took 11 hours to get from Kapishya to Katumbi. T4A shows a camp "Meteor" just before Muyombe. Does this exist and is it a viable overnight stop before entering Malawi?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.
    Pete

Yes on clearing at Isoka and getting Third Party in Mzuzu (you might be able to buy insurance in Rhumpi).

This road isn't very populated and I don't think wild camping is an issue. There is a very simple guest house in Muyombe with a compound you can camp in. Sorry, I don't have the name. The Malawian border at Katumbi is friendly. Just a small cement block building.

p.s. very much worth spending some time in Nyika. It's wonderful.

Thanks for the info. Any idea where to get 3rd Party in Mzuzu?

All the major companies should be in Mzuzu. I usually go with Prime Insurance (forget where the Mzuzu office is).
