Default 12 volt Caravan fridge / freezer

    Assistance required please!

As with all things all worked fine untill......
My 12 volt Caravan fridge /freezer suddenly only works when powered from the battery with the power switched off to the charger (Hercules 20). The moment the power is switched on the unit switches off/ stops working. Any ideas what could the problem be. The battery is approximately 2 years old.

    Any assistance will be appreciated.

    Regards Johan

Don't you get a bad odour from the battery which might indicate the Hercules is over charging and the fridge senses over voltage and switches off. The fact that it runs perfectly on the bat shows the vat can still supply the power needed. It is still a problem as the bat needs to be charged.

What is the voltage before and and after this happens?

Very good question. If there is a short on the Hercules pulling the battery voltage down causing the fridge to stop then one would have thought the short would be present even without the AC on to the Hercules.

    Many thanks for the feedback.

As I am on the road for the next two weeks further investigation will have to be delayed. I am currently running the fridge on the battery untill flat. I then switch the power on to charge the battery and start the cycle again. Fridge runs on the battery for about 18 hours and the battery charges in about 6 hours.

If you on the road, why is it not running from vehicle alternator?
There is no task too simple for some people to complicate !

I had such a issue with a snomaster. Once the battery is about to be fully charged the volts getting too high for the fridge and it stops. Started again if the charger is disconnected. Local agents could not fixed it. So no snomaster for me anymore.

If you have a multimeter measure the voltage while charging or better still about 5 hours into the charging cycle. It does seem the Hercules could be providing a voltage higher than the fridge max allowed. A few cases is known where the Hersules started over charging at up to 17V and that needs to be repaired. Left too long and you will cook your battery.

Thank-you. Yes, it is a Snomaster.
The battery is used for some 12v lights, fridge and movers. Would it not be better to install a small DB board for the plug points, 220v lights and run a National Luna intelligent charger from there to charge the battery?

Those DB/chargers normally work well. I will just remove it and have the few components adjusting the voltage repaired. All wiring just plugs in on the unit and easy to remove. Leon in Pta North can do the repairs.
