    Default Satellite data

I am staying in a rural area and had companies like My-Fi and NES out, but no coverage without putting up a tower. What options are available for satellite data that is reliable and will not break the bank?

Always ask what the contention ratio of the bandwidth on offer is.

usually with v sat solutions its quite high.

if contention ratio is 20 on a 10 mbps download- you going going to be lucky to experience real speeds of 1mbps at peak times

I was told some years back than Telkom had some solution on offer. I never verified.

Just for interest I tried to see installation cost. Did not see any.

From my own experience business or person which/whom relies mainly on e mails, data downloads and streaming is not an issue the speed requirement is not that high. E mails arrive and for large downloads of data, program updates and similar using download manager and automated scheduling things work. Frustrating sometimes. More important are availability/reliability of the connection and the total data limit.

As a tip. Some people use NES at the holiday place. Our common water tower is used for the antenna system. Antenna are at about 12 to 13 m up. I used first directional antenna to a cell tower and now omnidirectional antenna. Antenna is a solution where there are towers but signal is too poor to use.

Thanks for all the replies. It does not look like there are many people with experience. I would not like to be the pioneer.

That's really not terrible pricing but they say uncapped, what does the small print say about the Fair Usage Policy?

So many Internet ads bandy around the term uncapped only to have some ridiculously low soft cap that then throttles the connection to an unusable level.

I have Vox at home, 50mbps line. Never had a days problem. A friend's child broke the white box thing on the wall, ripped the fibre line out. They came out the next day and fixed it no charge.

Always streaming netflix/dstv and have downloaded alot and never been throttled or whatever.

Cheap would mean about R1600pm for Starlink. In Oct 2019 they indicated to get global coverage would mean launching another 1440 satellites.

I am using Telkom, but even Vodacom is poor in my area. I'm in a rural area.

Can you be a bit more specific about ‘rural’

There are many Wifi Service providers that give excellent bandwidth
They have towers on high sites all over.

I am on a Herotel group owned WISP in the sundays river valley

I have 6Mb Uncapped unshaped at R950 pm

For sure they sometimes go down for a few hours. But it is 99.9% uptime.

    Netflix etc, no hassles

    Look up WISP Pretoria
