Default Kruger travel time - Letaba to Berg en Dal

    Hi everybody
We are planning a trip to Kruger park in May. I have not been to the park since childhood.
The only available accommodation I can find so far for the 4 nights we have (that suites our requirements) are Letaba and Berg-en-Dal camps.
I'm thinking 2 nights in Letaba and 2 nights Berg-en-Dal.
How realistic is the drive inbetween in 1 day? How long will it take +-?

Should we rather do all 4 nights in 1 of the camps?
In Letaba we have to get 2x bungalows (dont know if its ideal to split up. Mopani is another available option if we want everybody in 1 cottage.)
In Berg en Dal we can get a cottage for everybody together.
Which 1 and what are your thoughts on these options?

    Thank you very much!

    Hi,

Can't help you with the accommodation portion of your question only travelling between camps, as we camp.

We did it in 2018 but to Malelane (9km from Berg en Dal) on our way to Swaziland and had enough time to stop for a bunch of great sighting along the way (Some of the best sighting of the whole trip). Leave first thing in the morning and you will have enough time for a quick take-away at Tshokwane. We drove at 40km/h but averaged about 30 km/h. We left at 5am and got to Malelane at about 5pm after check in at the gate.

SANPARK have a table on their websit and in their map book, about distances/driving times. (I see it is 224 km). At a constant 50 km/h it will only take you about 4 1/2 hours. In reality, you may double that and still be in time.

I have done that route many times, and it is more than do-able.

The two camps will give you nice exposure to different regions of the Kruger.

To make that trip in one day in my opinion would be crazy. You would need to curtail your stops, what if you had some great sightings that you wanted to spend some time on them.

You see little at 40km/h only the obvious big stuff. 30km/h and less is when your sightings increase. Also if you have kids, 12 hours in a car?

Luckily no kids on the trip. I will keep you concern in mind.
Maybe 'push' for time during part of the day, then go slowly the rest of the day. We also have the other 3 days to do proper game drives.

Your trip to Berg en Dal is a game drive. That is how I see it. I have done that trip quite a few times.
Will check if I have my track logs and post it here.

Yes can be done, no problem, done it many times. 40 km/h cruise control and slow down to 20 / 30 km/h in the interesting areas. Still enough time for sightings, but obviously no time to sit for an hour at several water holes.

Agreed. This is what we do when moving camps as well. We don't speed, but we don't dilly dally either. We will obviously stop for major sightings.

The time on the table posted by All in One is handy, but remember the time is calculated at a speed of 25kmph. So even at a steady 40 kmph with some stops, the time will be considerably less.

You can easily do it. Just leave early and dont fart around. General rule of thumb in kruger is that the camps are spaced about 50km from each other using the tar roads. So at 50km/h you are an hour between camps. This was done for emergencies. If you have an emergency in the park you are theoretically no more than 30 minutes from a main camp. The stretch between satara - tshokwane - skukuza is about 90 minutes each. Use this 1 hour minimum to guage your travel time in your head (at 50km/h) to avoid being late and having to dash 80km/h to the camp gate. I see this all the time where people under estimate the travel times. Otherwise enjoy the trip. We dont do the long travels anymore as we visit the park regularly. But when you dont visit often, do the long days and explore the vastness and very different landscapes while doing your game drive from camp a to b.
