i took it off an old waeco inverter I had. I am sure you can buy them at electrical shops

When using MPPT controller the controller is constantly loading the panels to reach the max power point as far as current and voltage is concerned. The voltage drops as more current is passed through. If you have different configurations like 2 in series and 3 in series in the 2nd group the controller cannot determine what loading to place to reach the max point. If I am wrong on this I would like to be corrected. This is how I understand it but it is one test I have not done.

Don't sweat to much on how to connect. Try the one method and measure your results and after a few weeks you can try the other way of connection. Just ensure you start of with wiring from the panels to controller to handle 5 panels in //.

You have a great controller with all the recordings to know what works best.

Bear in mind as TTT indicated in series you will get the current of the lowest panel through the few panels that can supply more. Thus it is only about a 5W loss.

The controller does not have to maneuvre anything as long as you stick to below the max panel volts. It will control the amps and volts for max power.
Just to make sure, you're saying I should start with all 5 in serie? Is this // not the sign for a parallel connection?

Or is || parallel and // implies serie? Sorry if this is a dumb question. This is not my day job.

    Parallel=//. My own short hand wil show - - - - - as serie.
    Sorry for the confusion.

I see there is a price drop from R2200 to R1602 on the 1500/3000W inverter for the next 9 hours only.

OK, I now have the 5 panels in serie.

As can be seen from the photo, the two extra ones on the right has partial shade on them which should dissapear within the next 30 min.

This is the reading taken at 09h10

The only loads currently on the battery is two laptops and a camping fridge.

A little later I will put the house on solar except for the fridges and the stuff with elements to see how the system copes.

    Let's see how this goes.

And 15min later I connected the house (and shocked myself for probably the 20th time now) with the only large loads being 2 household fridges and the camping fridge.

Who are you and how did you get onto my roof and move my panels around!!!

    Many reasons.

The shade from a couple of big trees approaches from the street area and my neighbor to the left of the pic (where you shoved my panels) in the late afternoon. The neighbor whose garage roof is identical and joined to mine is already in shade when more than half my roof still has sun.

That and where they are now gives them a little angle for the lower/angled trajectory of the winter sun, making it almost perpendicular at high noon. You will see they are angled on a ledge/parapet.

And in the rainy season that roof collects serious water. I do not want the connection boxes to be submerged. The ledge takes care of this.

Final reason is that where they're now, is the closest to my battery and controller and inverter. Less cable required.

Method in the madness I tell you.

Nico this looks good. Shade one can sometimes not do anything about. I also have a tree next to the main road casting shade over my panels in the afternoon.

Good to see your actual results from the Victron.

Thanks, the initial results look very promising. I can see the Victron working its magic.

Referring to one of your previous posts, in theory I have 110 Volt to work with. The highest I've seen the panels produce thus far was 96 Volts. So that is only 14 Volts short which seems very reasonable to me.

It would be interesting to see what the max is they'll reach, perhaps when the batteries are a bit more drained.

    I'll post results.

Oh yes, sending you a pm re the 12V Changi.

Nico I have replied to the PM. Yes as I indicated you might never see the actual 110V from your panels and therefore I mentioned you are save with your Vmax of the Victron controller. In over a year my panels have never reached the Vmax. If we were in the Northern Cape then we might see the Vmax. I still think our irradiance is too low.

I would take a guess that the Victron can extract more power from the panels than my Solis MPPT but this statement is based on a short period that I used a 100/20 Victron Smart. The Solis I have propper stats for over a year.

I've built a setup far my parents' business. Built everything into an old computer box. There is enough space for 4 more lifepo4 cells at which time I will decide to keep it 12v or change to 24v with a 24v inverter. I will also upgrade the charge controller at that time.

How big are these batteries that more than 4 can fit in the computer box?

I will try uploading the fotos from the PC this morning. I don't know why it posted as attachments.

Sorry for the confusion, it is 4 lifepo4 cells making up one battery.

Edit: I've managed to correct the photos in my earlier post. Don't know what happend.

I was following this thread closely as I was planning on building myself a backup system. In the end I found a 2nd hand Axpert 3kVA 24v for R4000, which includes an 1800W MPPT and 30A AC charger. So before you go for the Changi, look around a bit... some good deals can be found if you're buying from someone who is upgrading to a bigger system!

My inverter came just after lockdown, and my plug to be abke to use it on Friday. I've got it on a fully charged deep cycle battery. Battery is fine to run my Waeco fridge more than 24 hours. If I plug the vacumm cleaner in, it works. My Defy 640 side by side fridge / freezer - no go ☹️. The inverter just cuts out.

Surely a 1500W / 3000W inverter should be able to drive that fridge? Am I missing something here? Saw earlier on the thread of guys using heat guns with the inverter.

Please give advice for where to look. Or did I get a dud? ☹️

    HI Deon.
The 1st thing I would do is to put a multimeter on the battery and see what the reading is when you plug in the fridge. Yes I reported that my heat gun at about 1000W works on the inverter. Further I can start a big 2 door old type Kelvinator, bar fridge and 150L chest freezer all at the same time. I had them connected on my Sonoff to measure the power used by the 3 units. I did start all 3 for a number of times. I used 2 x 100Ah batteries so it is key that your battery can supply the start current of the Defy.
As a test I also got my microwave to start and it used 1350W doing so.

If it makes some beeps then it is most probably due to overload of inverter or battery voltage low. The low voltage can be measured as indicated to rule it out.
