I am battling to get choice of batteries. At Midas I can buy a 200 amp gel(not agm and dont know the difference) for R5000.00
The same brand 100 amp gel is R2750. Is there any benifit to buy two and pay R500 more.
Are these prices reasonable and is gell okay and what is the difference between gel and agm.

Where did you Durban guys buy your batteries.?

You would have to Google and you will find a lot of circuits how to wire it. The colours of wiring sometimes differ between the various meters. Bear in mind that the ammeter does not readily show pos or neg amps and just a reading.

Also the wiring differs with or without sjunt. Also some meters are shipped with the wrong sjunt. The sjunt value is normally on the side of the meter.

You do get a back lit ammeter that shows pos/neg amps but it costs about R250 at ebay. Normally white colour with blue back light and black numericals.

Thanks a lot for the great advice, I didn't do my homework on the charger and will have to get a bigger one. Intend buying an MPPT and some panels next month to suppliment/replace the charger.

The croc clamps are for the charger, the inverter is bolted down.

This photo is of my makeshift installation that ran a light, tv and internet at 90w only while I was away from home. Today I will be doing the permanent installation with a new DB board and transferring the essential circuits, lights, alarm, internet and fridge. This totals around 1300W.

I need some advice on earthing of the board, thanks.

As the Optimate 5 only charges at 4A you will not be able to put more than about 30Ah back into the battery in the 8 hours between LS. This is about 360Wh. Thus you are very marginal if you used 144W or less during the 2.5hours LS. If we have stage 2 for a few days in succession your battery will become flat. If you use an average of 240W during the 2.5hours of LS you took out 600Wh and can only replace 360Wh. 240Wh is not replaced per LS session.

Normally one would not use more than 1200Wh from the battery which is a 50% DOD. The short fall of 240Wh per LS would mean after 5 LS sessions your battery will be at 50% DOD after charging 8 hours and one would not take it through any further LS sessions.

I would look at a much bigger charger before the new battery is destroyed.

    Quick Google search

The main difference between gel and AGM batteries is the charge rates. AGM batteries can handle higher charge and discharge rates than gel batteries. ... Gel batteries are more expensive than other lead-acid battery types, so they are not ideal outside a handful of specific solar applications (very hot climates, mainly).

Did part of my installation today. Now running my Geyserwise controller for the solar circulation pump, some outside LED lights and an emergency light in the kitchen.
The outside lights are not really required but It was easy to use that circuit.

I fitted s relay on the Geyserwise outlet to switch the element on/off.
Now to run a new wire to the alarm system.
The inverter display only shows the Geyserwise power usage when the little pump kicks in. When I add the emergency light it jumps up with exactly 8watt as per the light rating. I guess the inverter does not display usage below a certain value.

Everything fitted on top of the kitchen cupboard. All you can see from ground level is the inverter display and part of the battery.Click image for larger version.

Midas sells cars parts ... :-)

If you are in that price bracket, drop me a PM, I have a connection at Dixon, for AGM/GEL whatever the sell.

Or go to your nearest branch that sells Dixon batteries, decided what you want, ask them ... do your homework with good advice form battery sellers.

If you then have a Dixon battery in mind, send me a PM and I'll see what I can arrange for you at that branch, for less than the floor price.

If Dixon does not fancy you, look at Omnipower batteries, go for brand names when you talk R5k price range ... and add a BMV ...

Go to First National Battery ...

Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I am not in the league of most on here with high amp/watt usage.
I have a number of 12v 7amp alarm batteries that drive led lighting around the house during LS. I have a small Chinese charger i use to recharge them but like to know the amps or milliamps as the process goes on...

Yes you will be able to wire in a ammeter/voltmeter. There is enough space between the PCB and the outside cover.
Now you just need to have a meter without a sjunt

This is what I fitted to my Benton BX1. Now I can see at any time what the charge voltage and amps is.

From what I understand it seems all batteries go through a bulk charge where eighty percent of the battery gets charged. If one used a power pack like in the pic which is cheap could one not fill the battery to the eighty percent and then use a smart charger to just do the rest?

It all depends on the exact output of the supply. If it is 12.0V then it will not work, because if you connect a discharged battery to it that is 12.1V nothing will happen. For current to flow, the input voltage needs to be higher than that of the battery.

Depending on the battery chemistry, one is looking at a charge current around ~ 14v+, where a 12v power supply will provide a constant 12v output. You will not get any charge going.
