    Exclamation Catalytic converters -watch them!

I predict that the local crime industry (of the scrap metals procurement & processing division) will follow suit once they twig on.

Rhodium and Palladium prices have rocketed, and there's a bit of these in all converters. I believe that extraction is fairly specialised ..but then even Bosasa was running a copper-smelting plant sideline! -can't be long before a crooked metals dealer finds a way with the Rhodium/Palladium

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/busin...0b1_story.html!

I note it seems a trend in a few Western countries...UK,US...

-we always lag a bit here, but certainly do show our capabilities once we twig on and get into the swing of it!-especially the crooked!

There has been a huge rise in catalytic converters being stolen from cars in 2019, police in London say.
For the first six months of 2019, the number of thefts of catalytic converters jumped to 2,894, compared to 1,674 thefts for all of 2018.
In a car's exhaust system, catalytic converters clean up harmful gases before they exit the exhaust pipe.
In a video seen by the BBC, a criminal gang stole a catalytic converter in under three minutes in broad daylight.
The prices of certain precious metals have skyrocketed in the last 18 months - palladium is now worth £1,300/oz, while rhodium goes for £4,000/oz, according to FJ Church and Sons, a specialist metals merchant that is also the UK's largest specialist in recycling catalytic converters.
The police urged vehicle owners "to be vigilant" and consider taking safety measures to protect their cars.
    How the theft works

A catalytic converter is located in a box on the exhaust pipe under a car. In order to steal it, thieves slide under the car and use high-powered cutting tools to detach the box from the pipes around it.

Not sure myself how easy mine is to get to, but I will certainly check now and make a bloudraad plan to secure it!

Be aware, members, look sharp and be safe!

They are already stealing them off the import/fong kong cars coming through Durban en route to us and other SADC countries!

I know one of the dealers here in Gabs and they only bring in their cars now containerised. More expensive but they are sealed up... crazy.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.....

How much Runt value would the average 4x4 cat fetch in terms of recycled metals. I am going to decat the H so if I can turn a quick buck from them why not? I have 2 of them being a 5.3lt V8.

They might be clueless when needing real brainpower for business, like running Eskom and SAA, But when it comes to self-gain, there are no limits. How many of you can break into modern cars in under 5 minutes, bypassing anti theft and immobiliser devices and alarms, get it started, and then toss out the untraceable tracker within 10 km?

    -decent prices-?

Even at half the illustrated price at converted $/R exchange rate, the local scrap generators would jump at a few 100 R's for 10 minutes with a crowbar/grinder/hacksaw!

I fear, and wager, that we will start hearing of this happening more frequently locally quite soon-especially double-hummered strikes!.

My 2019 2.8 Hilux OEM zozt does not have a CAT, comes like this from the factory.

The FJ however will have a CAT, mmmmm I may just apply this reasoning to go freeflow

This is getting world wide problem. In UK big problem. Hits in Scandinavia. Old Eastern Europeans are going around as gangs and not only these. They come with a shopping list. One looks, couple steal and some other transport. Short time in one country.

Specific car makes and types are on the hit list. If I remember correctly hybrids like Prius are good to go for.

    Cordless grinders

An other item they go after are airbags and what ever is covering them. Cost of those on a BMW...

Soon car manufactures are going to be forced to re-design and install these CATs DPFs etc within the engine - such as an integral part of the exhaust manifold, bolted directly on the head....

So in good old SA, where they steal your whole car and get R500 for it, you are worried about cat converters?

All I see is chop shops making more profit.

    Yes.
-Like I 'worry' about my car being stolen ( so I get insurance, and make sure to keep it as safe as reasonably possible), and like I 'worry' about my spare-wheel being stolen ( even though I have insurance, I still lock and secure the spare-wheel to prevent theft, prevent hassle, prevent excess costs) -I will 'worry' about my cat. being stolen, and, despite insurance, will make sure it is- as well as reasonably possible -secured.

    Certainly
-more cars/usable parts stolen= more chop-shop profit+ more thief profit.

    More damaged/'scrap cat.s= more metal-thief profit+more scrapyard profit

More complacent/ignorant citizens+more potential thievable parts=more prosperous criminals

Maybe you misunderstand. Vehicle theft is ripe as is. I doubt they are going to steal your car specifically for a cat converter. I also highly doubt they are going to take the time to just steal the cat converter. So in essence, protect your whole car, no need to specifically worry about cat converters IMO.

Spare wheel is a different kettle of fish, it's easily accessible on some cars, so quick buck to be made.

Seems like your logic was also easily accessible!

It was just a simple heads-up , for sensible members here who like to be situationally aware -it was not meant as a comprehensive analysis and strategy on theft and related criminal activity, nor on related civil member intransigence.

    Take it, or leave it!
