Katima Molilo to Itezthi Tezhi on D769?

I posted this in the Namibia section by mistake:
Katima Molilo to Itezthi Tezhi on D769?

    Hi one and all.
We are planning at trip from Cape Town heading to Tanzania via Namibia and Zambia. Will leave Cape Town late April.

I am still looking at route from Katima Mulilo to Kafue.

Am considering traveling via D769 to Itezhi Tezhi and along Spinal Route to Kasabushi Camp en route to McBride's but am concerned as no trip report I have read mentions going this way.
Some folks go via Livingstone to Itezhi Tezhi but the D769 is more direct.
Is there a reason to avoid D769?

Any suggestions of recommended campsite on this route (Katima Mulilo to Itezhi Tezhi, would be appreciated esp just after entering Zambia)

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers
    Barry

Do you mean the D787 ?

In 2015 we reached the southern shores of Itezhi Tezhi lake (Hippobay) via Kalomo, from Livingstone and took us around 8hrs. At that time the Cordon road was quite overgrown. Any how, independently of the route you choose, it will be a long way to Kasabushy. You should consider to split the journey at least in two.

Why not drop a line to Kasabushy and ask specifically about the road? Andy and Lib are extremely helpful.

    Enjoy.

The road form Sesheke to Kazangula Zamibia side is a horrible pothole road. Slow you done to about 40 kpu. If thats not an issue do it, its better then using the border post and ferry at Kazangula. Else go up to Mongu from Sesheke and then east to Kafue.

The road form Kalomo to Kafua (D714) and the spinal road in the park is good.

Dont know the D787 form Sesheke to Kafua, but if its a good gravel road than that its an option, but you still need to travel 40 kilos and that bad road.

From Katima border(Wanella) cross the bridge on the road to Livingstone. About 50km outside Sesheke you find a road to your left Mulobezi. Follow the road to the old saw mill and train repair yard.
In Mulobezi you will find the ZAWA Scout offices for entrance into Kafue at the most Southern entrance Dumdumwenze.
They will give you all the information of road conditions in the Park etc.
The Scouts often drive this road so the tracks should be visible.
The road to Livingstone start getting bad about 20km outside Sesheke.
The road to Mulobezi is corrugated so take out your false teeth and strap your bra!

No Problem...you can stock up at the Pick & Pay in Katima.
Sometimes in Namibia they have road blocks.

Thanks for advise re food and route. Do you think that the route you described will be passable in late May? if not which route would you recommend to Central Kafue NP?

Judging on the rainfall up in the Kongo and Angola the floodplain will not be so severe this year.
This route has one bridge that normally gets washed away during the flood period.
Locals in the area would then guide you through the 1 meter deep water crossing.
This road through the bush was the main track to Mongu during the days before the 26 bridges was build over the floodplains.
It links to the tar road Mongu - Kafue to Lusaka about 80 km outside Mongu.
For a good drive I suggest:
Katima to Kabula relax with a cold Mosi after a stressful border crossing.
Then on the new tar road to Mongu and on to Liuwa National Park for 2 nights.
Then back to Kalabo (entrance to Liuwa) and on to Kafue National Park.
Then via spinal road down to Southern entrance of Kafue and on to Victoria Falls.
    ENJOY

Drove this from Nanzhilla, Mulobezi to Katima in July 2016, was quite easy, need high clearance though, very sandy for the most part, Steve at Nanzhilla might have more up to date info as well.

Thanks again to all who replied. The cold Mozi is very tempting. Cheers Barry
