    Hi there,

im certain it would be quite a mission actually.
Navigation is possibly available from Toyota as the later models have them already, just software upgrade it takes. Mirrorlink and CarPlay is already standard in Oz and the Far East and confirmed it was just a software upgrade on the existing units.
Now only if Toyota SA would offer it here.

Sorry I know not much help with your current situation. Hope we can lobby Toyota SA for it.

You can check out a place called Auto Tech Systems on Facebook.

They install a module on the standard radio (2.8) that allows you to have Apple Car Play for R2400. Have only seen a video of it in action but seems really cool!

Spoken to them a few months ago when they still ironed out the bugs. When it was finally ready the quote seemed a little high (5k), but at this price itís worth a punt, having it installed this week, will report back.

Default Fortuner 2.8GD6 2016/7 Radio Replacement

Had it installed last week (they collected and delivered wifes vehicle at her work), so I only drove the car over the weekend.

So this is a completely standalone device which doesnít really integrate into the Toyota system like I thought it would (my own fault).

This Ďsystemí plugs into the 3.5mm jack in the centre console to get the sound to the radio, it also has a USB 3.0 port sticking out the dash where you plug your phone in (I would have preferred it use the current USB input on the 3.5mm jack faceplate, but obviously canít due to the way this thing is designed). To get the radio into CarPlay mode, you need to:

    Plug in phone
    Choose AUX input on radio
    Press power twice on radio

Now CarPlay shows and you can work it like any other system.

To get out, you remove phone wire and press power once (but this is shaky, still need to figure out what the correct way is to go back to normal radio).

    Positives:
    - itís only R2400
    - Phone buttons on steering still works
    - charges phone (the factory builtin usb doesnít charge my phone)

    Negatives:
    - Video feed from device to radio is crap quality. Not clear as youíd expect
    - video is cut off on left side (time of 21:48 displays as 1:48 for instance) installer says this can be fixed, will take back to fix
    - youíre in Aux mode, so you canít listen to radio or CD when in ĎCarPlayí mode, only the music on your phone
    - getting into the mode isnít user friendly (my wife will never use it)

Another thing I noticed, the system messed with the reverse camera. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to remove the reverse screen after you put it in drive, other times it get stuck on the screen permanently until you start pressing buttons like Home etc.

To summarize, I donít think it was worth it in its current state, its not ready to go to market just yet. They will have to make some adjustments and tweaks which Iím sure theyíll figure out. But things like the video quality will always be like that (itís not thaaaaat bad, maybe I just expected more).

Will take some pics at some stage to try and show the resolution.
