    Default Kgalagadi in summer advice

    Hi All
We are planning a trip to Kgalagadi later this year or early next year. We have been to this park many times, but always between June-Aug and never in the summer. This time around we want to experience thunderstorms and a greener Kalahari. We are camping with a bush caravan, and thought of staying at Nossob again, else Mata Mata. We are not bound by school holidays, and actually prefer being there out of season. Can any one help with advice on the best time to be there during rainy season. We thought of Jan/Feb? Any advice? Regards
    Pat

I'd go Feb/March, chances are much higher of seeing greenery and you may catch a storm or two.

The rains were early this summer, and last year they hardly got any, so it is a bit of pot luck, but generally Feb/ March is slap bang in the rainy season.

    Summer - really hot!
I found at 50C - November - we did not want to go out on game drives.
April - May are decent months still with some greenery and flowers depending on the weather.

If you are going in the rainy season those roads can be flooded and game of course heads into the bush.
Problem at the moment with global warming is that no one can forecast likely weather.

I visited in january 2019. Stayed in the park for 19 days and had a blast. So may sightings. Last year the Kgalagadi received very little rain, so park was dry and it was hot. Above 40 degrees every day, but we liked it. And there was lots of space at the camps. From early january most of the tourists were gone. There was even space at Rooiputs if you wanna camp.

Hi Pat, it is certainly worth braving the heat and seeing a green Kalahari, but exactly when that is, is a bit of a lottery. Right now looks like a good time!

The wet roads are not a problem as they are all sandy so good traction. The campsites can be a problem as some of the areas become flooded. I have seen this in Nossob and Twee Rivieren and know friends who have been flooded out at Mata-Mata, so you need to chose your site carefully.

The first photo below was taken at the end of Feb, Kgalagadi still dry but CKGR was green, and the others were taken in the 2nd week of April.

    Hope this helps.
