Default New and need advice on tight budget -100k max

    Hi all,

I have got some extra bucks coming in and want to get a 4x4 for off-road as planning to do some countryside touring.
    Max is 100k budget.

Any advice? What must I stay away from in terms of reliability and service costs?
Obviously they will have high mileage at that budget....that's a given.

Have seen lots of Pajero, Prado, Landrover and Jeep on sale. Also some nice old Toyota landcruisers.
    Diesel or petrol?

Also might use it to tow caravan.

Glad to be part of the community.

Hi, in that price range I would probably look for a Mitsubishi colt 2.8D. They have a good reputation for being reliable and you can tow no problem.

Welcome to the forum here you will find friends and advice.
As for your R100k miracle - spend the hours reading up on reliability of various vehicles, you will be much wiser.
Get a person that you can trust, and have him/her go over it before you buy.
My recommendation would be an early Pajero with service record.

I know Im a broken record these days, but id recommend a Nissan Patrol. You'll find a nice 4.5 in that budget I reckon. Not the fastest thing out there, and drinks like a fish, but reliability is 100%

    Interesting.
Drinks like a fish scares me off though!
Although land cruiser probably does too.

Will do a lot of west coast driving, very rough off roads etc.

    There's a 2001 Prado 3.4 V6 Petrol for sale on here.

Kms on 123k, for R 130k, as far as I can remember.

Edit if you can stretch your budget you must really have a good look, this is your vehicle in my opinion.

Anything Japanese that has been looked after is your best bet. If the car you are looking at has been on the coast watch for rust. Especially those old Cruisers. I think it comes down to preference. I personally would chuck the cash at a Patrol if you can find a loved one. They are spacious and comfortable for touring. Remember that those engines, inside the Prados, Patrols, Pajeros etc. Are gas guzzlers, but they are also very unstressed engines. They are high capacity but low output which sounds ###, but is great for reliability Let us know what you settle on
