Is building your own not an option?
|
Hi guys,
this forum is full of nice people with tons of different experiences and expectations, so I hope to have a nice discussion soon!
I use a 110 for all our trips in southern Africa, and it is a standard 5-door version.
It needs an upgrade spacewise, I am a bit tired of carrying ammo boxes in and out ten times a day.
So I am looking for a drawer system as a start.
Front Runner drawers look nice, but are quite expensive. There is a commercial member (Stone Accessories) that offers a drawer system for around 7.500 ZAR, about half the price of the frontrunner system.
Is there anybody out there who knows either one of the systems and can tell about advantages/disadvantages?
Which one has more space, less screws pointing inwards and punching wholes in beer and wine containers... simply is better?
And, of course, if you have a system that you dont need anymore: I am looking, and it does not necessarily have to be new!
By the way, I wish a nice 2020 with miles and miles od adventure and travel to everybody!

Only advice I can give you is be sure that the complete drawer system is covered in cloth otherwise rattles etc will drive you crazy - simple but many overlook this. If its covered in aluminium chequerplate dont touch it.
I would suggest trying to make one that suits your needs. Will cost you half the price again and you build what you want.

Hi,
yes, I already thought about more noise from behind - I surely try to avoid.
Building one could be an option, but I am living in Germany and the car is in SA. Makes it a bit complicated!
And the time that I can spend in Africa is limited.
Otherwise it would be a great project for lots of week-ends.

Post a picture of the system you had in mind, the FR one for instance

If you build yourself use Furnlock slides, they are pretty good and can take some weight.
Here's my own build. Modular so it ca convert to a double bed (for short people)
Hi,
here are some pics. The open Landy is taken form the website of Stone Accesoires (http://www.stone4x4accessories.com/defender-110.php)
https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php/323371-Storage-Space-For-Your-Defender?p=4271840#post4271840, I think about buying this drawer.
The other drawer is the frontrunner one. looks a bit more solid (https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.co...r-tdi-td5.html) as it has double slides on each side. But the price is a lot more.
And I am not sure about the INNER dimensions. Maybe the Frontrunner has a bit mor usable space? I will send a PM to stone and ask.

You definately want sliders?
I went low tech with off-the-shelf aluminum square tube and connector system and friction large lid ammo boxes. The Hummer H3 isnt big in the boot area but it suits my needs. Cheap as chips and easy to assemble, you just need a saw, file and drill plus some spanners. Take you a day the next time you pop out, if you pre-order the materials

Thank you all for your help and suggestions,
I decided to buy the drawer system from Stone Accessories (https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...-Your-Defender)
It looks nice, but I have just seen it on pictures. So I will be able to tell you if it was a good decision by the end of April when I go to SA and install everything in the back of the landy.

Hello. 'm piggy backing this thread, it's in line with storage decoration and systems in the rear of the Defender 110 SW (2005) .
It's near to impossible to find a 3D diagram of the rear space (everything behind the front seats) with angles, shape and bits positioning with precise measurements.
I've managed to collect a fair amount of measurements (not sure how accurate they are) off the net. I still need to source measurements for the placement and size of the rear side windows, the folded height and dimensions of the rear seats and possibly a few other things need to be taken into consideration such as points of fixture
So, searching continues, I wonder if perhaps you have any of these on diagrams you've made up?
Any leads are going to help further. I'm also based in EU, France, where my Defender is stationed in Krugersdorp. The idea is to pre-order the bits cut and then travel out to assemble there. Precision is key.
If anyone else reads this I'll be thrilled to read your input in the event you can help
Thanks a bunch

Sorry but I don't have the diagrams anymore. I built mine in 2012 and although I had a CAD program I did it old school on a drawing board.
It's all tig welded together and it's all aluminium with 16mm plywood on top.
My main part, with the drawers, is 1100mm x 845mm. It sits off-centre to the left, when looking forward. It bolts into the tub with about 4x 6mm bolts and 4x 6mm bolts into the left side.
It has two parts, attached by piano hinge, that folds open to cover the sides.
I put velcro on the top so that I can cover the whole thing with heavy duty carpet.
The two other parts are fitted when the rear seats are folded forward. I made it so that it covers the same width as the seat that is folded.
This means that I can keep one seat up for a passenger.
These two parts locate on locating pins I installed on the floor below the rear seats and each part bolts into the main part with two bolts each.
The whole setup forms a "double bed" but not for long people.
It's 1600mm when fully setup.
My wife can lay outstretched but I have to bend my knees a bit as I am about 1.8m long.
The mattresses was custom made by Carmaquip because of the length.
