Next step is to do a gearbox oil flush if needed. The dip stick next to the oil dipstick in the engine bay is for the gearbox. The oil should be a nice red cherry colour, check that it is. If not can point you to the thread to do a flush.
Once it's done you won't feel the gear changes

It's the same method discussed here, did mine not to long ago, used 12L diaqueen and disconnected pipe at the cooler then ran car and drained a few liters into a jug with markings so I knew how much. Then filled through dipstick tube and did it a few times until clean oil was coming out into the jug.

Have to get it to temp and then check level, cannot be over or under filled. When at temp put in neutral and check fluid while car is running.

Full service done. Air filter, Oil Filter, Diesel Filter, Oil, Brake Fluid, Front and Rear Brakes and belts, Jacques inspected everything afterwords again.
Not sure how the air filter is in the state it is in, I have some pics of the old and new air filter and belts and just for the hell of it, the service book as well, brake pads was completely shot and one can only wonder how the car made it through the roadworthy.
And the smoke is gone, and the fuel economy improved.

To summarise what was done on the PS
    1st inspection
Oil thick (while the engine was hot) and really dirty
    Vacuum pump thingy cleaned
    ECU reset and re-calibrated
    Oil filter change
    Oil changed

We decided to do an oil flush on the PS, thus "2 keer olie en filters pappie"

    2nd inspection
    Water levels inspected
Changed the Oil - even after 120 km the oil we added on the 1st inspection was already really dirty, but the consistency of the oil was more like oil, and not the gunk of the 1st inspection
Changed the Oil filter again (same reason as above)
Changed the Diesel filter (was full of grime)
Changed the Air Filter - the pics will tell it all (Old and new filters in the pics)
    Changed the rear brake pads
    Changed the front brake pads
    Changed the 3 belts
Adjusted the handbrake lever to the correct position
Checked the lights (had to replace 2 park bulbs)
And the brake fluid was replaced as this was also very dirty

Should Jacques ever read this post. thank you for being honest about what you found, and what needed to be done without breaking the bank. Gents in Capetown, lets support this chap, he is opening his own workshop in Stikland on the 1st of March if all goes well where he will service our Mitsu's, and give them their mani- and pedicures (including performance enhancements should you wish), just so they can go play in the mud again. His number is 084 941 1768 (Jacques Norval)
All in a days work I guess, thank you Jacques and team.
Awesome, glad you are sorted and that the 3.2 is back to being cared for the way it should be

Correct me if I am wrong, the Mitsubishi automatic gear boxes can only run on DiaQueen oil.

Diaqueen is not cherry red, it is a gold/light brown colour. The cherry red is the ATF used in other non Mitsubishi automatic gearboxes. Put normal ATF into your Mitsubishi automatic gearbox , catastrophic failure of the clutches is guaranteed.

Sweiss, glad you got sorted, enjoying my 3.2 auto Triton thoroughly, sure you will do the same.
I am however completely baffled - you started your thread by mentioning that your PS had a full service history with dealers.
Something does not add up with those perished belts and filthy air filter, not to mention the state of the engine oil - either the book is cooked, or the agent slipped up big time.
Maybe you must elaborate on which service center stamped the book - I want to avoid that service center at all costs.
Pics of the first 4x4 excursion please.

Hi Johan, I am also not precisely sure what to make of the fact that the service book shows all services done, and yet the PS was in a really poor state (service wise). I actually took a photo of the service book, and the dealer that did the services can be seen on there. I do not want to bring a possible good service station in question, when perhaps one engineer slipped up with the last service. i have seen how things go in these workshops and it has happened that a car goes in for a service, and comes out with just a wash, and keys handed to the owner (usually the owner that demands their vehicle back because he\she is in a rush and does not allow the workshop enough time to complete the tasks required). this is so wrong in so many ways.
All and all, the PS went from a packet of smokes a day, to none, well done to the PS. I know know that the time and effort(directly translates to cash) was well spent, and am confident that the PS is good as new(with 154000KM) on the clock now.

    Pics are coming... I promise!
