Default Defender Puma 2.4 blown head gasket cost

    Hi Guys,

so my puma went in for service in October - had a burst boost pipe so replaced them all with silicone pipes.

in December it seems i have now blown the head gasket

i have not had this problem before with this car but i have been quoted R26k to fix....great news for januworry.....for those of you that have had to do this would you say that is a reasonable charge or a bit/lot high?

Had same with mine last year 2019.

Speak to Leon Strydom from Custom Landy 072 648 9533. He charged me around R14K.

not sure yet if the head needs to be skimmed......im hoping not...the engine didnt overheat and had an alarm on the coolant bottle so when is emptied i could stop the car immediately.

it is with the guys at LR Extreme.... will have to wait and see what they say once the head is off.

    still seems a bit high - i would have expected about 14 - 16k

Are you sure that quote isn't for a brand new head?

100% Sure the guy at LRX will not screw you over, if it is that expensive there is a reason for it.

No, they wouldn’t screw him over, but they may still be charging a serious premium.

they do excellent work, and that is why they have so many satisfied customers, and their workshop is booked to the hilt..... but they are pricy. Depending on what the damage is, a simple head gasket replacement shouldn’t come anywhere near that. Obviously if the head is damaged (these heads are throw away items) that’s a different story.

but labour to remove the head shouldn’t be more than 2 hours tops. Another R2k for an engineering works to pressure test it, and maybe another 2K or so if they need to replace valves etc while they are at it.

another 2 hours to refit, and replace coolant and oil. R10-12 or even 14k is reasonable for all that, but surely not double that......

Can you ask for a breakdown of the quote, surely they will be upfront with you on that?

i have attached the estimate (i hope)

seems like from the post above that perhaps the 12h in the quote for removing and replacing the cylinder head is a bit heavy

Wow, ya....12 hours to remove and replace a cylinder head, by a professional workshop.... That is a bit hectic. I would not put it at more than about an hours work to remove, and about 2 hours to refit properly.

like I said LRX does do good work, but I think they do take the mickey when it comes to their labour charges. I had a similar experience the last time I had a car there, where they charged me 3 hours labour to replace break pads, over and above the labour they charged me for a full service. I have not been back since.

When I queried this charge, they told me it was the standard charge

To be fair, that 12 hrs is not just head work.

    Other items include:
    Thermostat
    Water pump
    Timing chain
    Air filter
    Etc

Will agree to disagree. All those items are par for the course when removing/replacing a head. Unless there is a need to replacing the timing belt at this stage, the timing should just be locked in place while the head is removed. Even 2 hours to take it off, and 3 hours to refit everything, would be reasonable all things considered, but 12 hours would need to include a lot of coffee and smoke breaks

Default Defender Puma 2.4 blown head gasket cost

There is a lot more than 2 hrs work to get a puma head off. Whole front of engine must come off to undo the timing chain

    Edit. Book allows 9.1 hrs

As someone with some experience with this, I also feel that 6 hours (12 total) for removal is a bit long.

If it was your first time, yes maybe but for a greased workshop that's long.
It's always a learning curve the more you do it the faster it goes.

7 hours for in and out would be the maximum I will except.

Unless I'm not seeing something that quote totals around R18.5k not R26k?

Which is expensive but not too far other prices people have mentioned in this thread?

They one constant in this thread is that Lrxtreme do quality work. They know their landys and especially defenders inside and out.

Land Rovers are maintenance sensitive beasts and tend to give problems when not taken care of properly. More so than their Japanese counterparts.

So the premium you pay for land rover specialists that are willing to back their work and have a good reputation is worth it in my mind.

They have done extensive engine and drivetrain repairs on my 110 and Im very happy with all there work 50 000km down the line.

    Just my 2c.

wow, okay. That is pretty hectic. I have only ever done heads on Tdi and TD5s.... and a few other smaller jap petrol engines. Never imagined a head could be that hard to take off. Guess that quote is in the ballpark then.
