Awd can drive with all 4 wheels powered all the time but using a transfer box you cannot drive on tar and hard surfaces you will get diff wind up. This transfer case sends equal power to both front and back difs. Awd works more like traction control so when in tar roads it sends less power to selected wheels and more to others when cornering. So when off roading it will send more power to the wheels with less traction so you could end up with a 1 wheel drive in certain scenarios. Like a fortuner in awd mode these are known As part time 4x4. Although power to all 4 wheels does not mean 4x4 . Equal power to all 4 wheels means 4x4

Does it have low range. You get all wheel drive cars like subaru audi etc but they are not 4x4. All models of fortuner are all wheel drive but the 4x4 has low range the transfer box is what makes it a 4x4. All wheel drive cars have something like a 30 ....70 split, makes them handle better on daily driving and sand roads, the transfer box makes it a 50...50 split . So really it can do sand tracks and dirt roads better than a 2 wheel drive but not as capable as 4x4. Also the articulation will be a problem on axle twisters and heavier tracks. And as mentioned the approach and departure angles.

The d4d fortuner 4x4 was all wheel drive with low range
The new GD 6 fortuner 4x4 not anymore

The Kuga will be able to do real soft off roading because of ground clearance and approach and departure angles

Kuga like Xtrail like Outlander like Tiguan are SUV's with AWD. Softroaders

Some say it must have Solid axels to be a 4x4
Some say it must have a Transfer case to be a 4x4

But then you get an Amarok, no transfer case and I rate it very close if not sometimes better in sand etc than a proper 4x4.

The Kuga is permanent AWD that basically only drives the front wheels. The rear wheels only get power when the computer senses wheel spin on the front wheels. Great for dirt tracks.

It is a SUV

Very few real 4x4 vehicles around ie Jeep Wrangler, G-wagen, Defender, FJ Cruiser, Steyr Puch, etc. (What I can think off immediately)

The rest are SUV whether they have low range or not.

Mercedes G-Class:
Approach: 31
Departure: 30

Land Rover Discovery 3/4:
Approach: 37.2
Departure: 29.6

Renault Duster:
Approach: 31
Departure: 34

By your definition, a Renault Duster is more of a 4x4 then a G-Class, and a G-Class is less of a 4x4 than a Discovery 3/4......
