    Default Licence discs

    Hi

Could somebody please point me to a link regarding the Road Traffic Act.

I have a query regarding the legality of a copy of the licence disc being used .eg. for a trailer or motorbike, where it can easily be removed/stolen.

    Thanks

I don't have a link but as far as I know it is illegal to make a copy of the disk and display it on the vehicle.

I think quite a few people do it, but they also keep the original close by, where it can be showed upon request. However, AFAIK, copies are illegal.

Yep. Also don't have the act on hand, but I've also seen that it has to be the original disc.

    Correct.

They do not allow copies at all. Not even with a stamp.

My trailer that I bought from my cousins late father's estate , still waiting for her to transfer to my name, the license expired. Needing to use it in jhb, she bought a license and scanned it to me. I printed it out in colour, cut it out and put the disc onto the trailer. From KWT to Jhb I was stopped at 3 traffic cop stops, trailer and bakkie license checked at all 3. They did not pick up that the trailer license was a copy.

My trailer disk was queried at a road block a while back since it had faded from sunlight exposure and they suspected that it was a printed (edited) copy !! Eish !

I used to do this on my boat trailer - make a copy and get it laminated to delay water damage. I also do it on my scooter and on a previous BMW Dakar. But always make sure I can produce the original as well (although I haven't bothered with that on the scooter). I had the whole license disk on the Dakar stolen once - they just broke the damn thing off... So I just made another copy of the original, and then kept it under the seat. But I've (fortunately) never been stopped, so can't share that experience.

I can't comment on the legality, but would also guess that it's illegal. But hey - what are we supposed to do when theft is so prevalent from bikes and trailers...

I'm sure a good quality colour copy would be hard to spot anyway...

I do this on my Bike.

Always scan the original, print a copy, laminate original and copy
Copy goes in the Disk holder (In case it gets swiped)
Original gets taped to the bike under the pillion seat, never had an issue

But I do believe its illegal, but pretty sure that if I am called out on it and can show the original, I should be ok

Since the license disk has to be renewed yearly it should not
make an appreciable difference based on the age of the
    vehicle.

I had, however, a problem with an old trailer because the license
    disk holder was not waterproof.

This was rectified by first laminating the disc making it
    waterproof.

In the meanwhile, taxis are driving around with newspaper clippings instead of license discs, and no-one says a word.

That's because those taxis are just as roadworthy as a newspaper, so they're not lying.

    Hi Folks,

I got stopped once near Standerton and was issued a ticket for failing to display a disc when I had placed a color copy of the original in the disc holder....I drove straight to the local prosecutor who cancelled the ticket after she had phoned the local provincial traffic police to find out that there was no Act in place which says you cannot display a photocopy....I was then advised by the Prosecutor to carry a good full color copy of the renewed licence in the cubby hole for future reference...

After that I stopped using a color copy..too much hassle...especially if you have to appear or consult...

How can they tell the difference behind a windscreen. Was it a bad colour copy?
