    Default December Odyssey

The mountains were dressed up with a blanket on Boxing Day. Perfect weather for a long slow drive to take in this awesome part of the world.

I was on a mission to get a great shot of the endangered Clanwilliam Cedar so we decided to take a circle route around the Cederberg, stopping and exploring as often as possible. Rough outline of or drive, Clanwilliam, Wupperthal, Eeselbang, Matjiesrevier, Cederberg Cellars then back:

    Jamaka Organics, first stop,

A very scenic drive with a couple of passes leads to Wuppertal

We were not expecting much in Wupperthal but was pleasantly surprised to see several restoration projects on the go.

How people still live here is surprising, yet they seem happy.

For the drive up the eastern bank of the valley 4x4 or at least a high clearance suv is recommended. Itís definitely a single track with little space to allow oncoming vehicles to pass but man, what an experience:

    The drive through the valley:

    Default December Odyssey

Our time in the Cederberg has come to an end and we spend the last day meandering down to Cederberg Cellar, taking a hike and making notes for our next visit. We will definitely be back here......as often as we can.

Had I been a Western Cape resident, I would be here every other weekend.

    The hike:

For the next leg of our trip we head to the Groot Winterhoek Wilderness area

Knocking down the Commander takes less than half an hour and then we are on the road. Getting out of the Cederberg Valley takes time but soon we get into a rhythm and settle down to enjoy the trip.

Itís only about a 3 hour drive but we never rush, making the most of everything along the way.

Just short of Porterville we turn towards the well known Dasklip Pass.

Ceder Peak is a quaint little mountain cottage nestled against the mountains. We enjoyed our stay here but in retrospect donít think it offers good value.

Here, time still has value. The sun only tucks itís head behind the mountains around 8pm.

The final part of this extraordinary odyssey has come to a premature end with the unexpected passing of my brother in the second week of the new year.

So, as a final tribute to him and also for me to be able to look back at this thread as a reminder of those final thoughts I had when I got the dreadful news, I post these images very much aware of how it helped during the healing process:

Porterville Church. Something Iíve been doing for a very long time. Taking a snap of the nicest church in every town we visit.

Dutch Reformed Piketberg established in 1833

    Riebeeck Kasteel:

    Tulbagh and the Winelands:

    Witteberg and Bainskloof:

    Trip summary:

After 17 days on the road having traveled 4680 kís at an average of 14.2 l/100 we spent just on R10500 on fuel.

Tires is another story. Our second one of the trip:

Parting shot of a storm just outside Kimberley:

    Ai, Zapiture

    Thank for sharing your journey.

I can't believe it also ends with a tire after starting with a tire.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Perhaps the conditions could have been much safer. For that reason only I’m prepared to spend the money.
    That is NOT the case.
The tyre has heated up due to some slow puncture or because of excessive heat transfer from the road or a combination thereof.
What you have seen in the mirror is the culmination of the event, the blow-out.
A tyre monitor alerts way before that happens, when the pressure drops below a threshold value (say 1.6 bar) or the temperature rises above 80 degC
Both values save the tyre if you stop when the alarm comes on and you will be able to safe the tyre.

Definitely a case and reasons for TPMS

Thanks for the interesting story and the excellent captures.

Hi, I'm so sorry to read about you loss and do hope that trip memories will overshadow the pain and sadness.

On the memory side I'd like to complement you on your church photos. They are stunning!

Curiosity - what camera and lens did you use for the Porterville church pic?
