At least you got something out of it, that rebuild was done relatively recently, over what time period was the 76k km done?

After a 4K roll back trip through Swaziland and another 3 K on a double axle trailer back to White River it was time to make the call...

First diagnosis was Hydraulic lifter failure ....But found some shavings in the oil.. might be a bearing..sounded like that..Serious knock

Swambo, picked the Fortuner and the deal was done in 3 hours, Waited to fit new Tyres, Clutch Kit, shocks and disc pads for a day, Loaded my Kayaks on the Tuna and came back home...last holiday wasted by my beloved Disco..

Sorry Petri I only saw yours when I arrived back home.

PS: It will certainly take time to get used to this bouncy vehicle

Hi and shame to be embarrassed by "bouncy & harsh".
All or most complaints come from TD V6. What about reliability of the V8 in the last Disco ll or the early Disco 3 ??

No personal experience with the D3 V8 but after owning a D2 V8 for 6 months the fuel consumption scares the living daylights out of me.

That said, if you follow the D3 threads like I do you will notice there are very rarely any complaints (other than a few known items shared between models like control arms, compressor etc).

Pity about your Landy. That's a hard blow.Feel your pain on the bouncy ride, I don't know how I will ever replace the my disco 4. Just finished a 4k km trip doing a bit of everything, including Baviaans and Sani and some other Lesotho 4x4 roads and its pretty much a catch 22. Faultless performance again but worrying to read stuff like this.

This is however the problem when Land Rover brought out the most unreliable P.O.S. ever seen on a public road with the Freelander 1, everyone said "Land Rovers are unreliable". Having just (sort of) recovered their good name after that debacle, Land Rover released an absolutely stunning vehicle with a time-bomb for an engine in the TDV6 and once again it is "Land Rovers are unreliable". What about the Defender, Disco 1 and 2's, Disco 3 V8, FL2, Range Rovers, not to mention thousands of Series vehicles still trundling around

But ja - "Land Rovers are unreliable" it will probably always stay...
I hear you. Just like comparing a Fortuner to a D3 will always stay. How one can compare the 2 i have no idea. The D3 cost twice the price of a Fortuner and has the air suspension and and and..... Chalk and cheese. But ja every Discovery 2 or 3 owner thats ever driven a Fortuner thinks its real crap. At least the fortuner will get you there AND back.

    Hi LRTDV6

unfortunately the risk for crank damage on engines past the end of line of the 6A production run, i.e. engines and sub assemblies produced after July 2006 is much higher statistically seen.

In your case it seems to have been a stuck valve. Were the heads reconditioned, when you fitted the new sub?

A big problem with the D3 TDV6 motors was the oil pump, especially from 7A model onwards, which led to delayed oil pressure build up from cold. Especially if the vehicle had been standing for some 10 days or longer. Any oil starvation at start up can and very often will eventually lead to valve travel seizure, due to scored valve guides etc.

Swambo has a 2005 model. Had it been a 7A or higher, we would have changed it for a V8 some 6 years ago already. Now going for the 260'000km service.

LRXtreme have some 5A and 6A models under service which have gone past 500'000km.

So the basic design of the engine is good. The real problem (JLR will probably never admit to this) seems to have been pre-production line QC.

It will be interesting to see what the long term engine reliability is going to be on the D5 and L405 Rangies (yes they sell them in Europe with the SDV6 engine). In about 2 - 3 years we will know. It would be nice, if this problem has finally been solved.

    so.

'n fiets is heel moontlik beter as die TDV6....
