Default Need advice on a camera!!!

    Hi Guys,

I have found myself in a spot of bother!
My staff have developed long fingers and are stealing our pigs.

I know more or less when and where.

Now I need to capture them on film.

I need a camera that can capture facial features from a distance of 150 - 200m.

I'm not looking at a CCTV application - although I'm happy to consider it as an extra.

So those who love taking nature photos from a distance could be of great help!

Daylight conditions. Good light unless it's overcast.

Even better would be if anyone could refer me to a PI or someone that specislises in these types of covert op!

At the end of the day it's not petty theft and I would need to do some serious surveilance.

    Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Are you looking for an auto solution like CCTV or manual camera where someone will sit with the camera and take photos when needed ?

Manual. Conditions may require that the camera be mobile.

Unless the pilot has a licence from the Civil Aviation Authority, it is illegal to fly a drone within 50 metres of a person or road. Illegally gained evidence will not stand in court.

A photograph in my opinion doesnít quite say as much as video. Secondly, to be safe itís important that your employees know that they are under constant surveillance, this should be penned in their contact. Lastly, if you want a cheap instant solution try Alfred https://alfred.camera/ All thatís required is an old phone that can be camouflaged in a box etc and placed wherever that offers more importantly motion detection.

I use a P530 (probably not available anymore) it has a 42x zoom (yes i know it goes into digital zoom also) but the shots are amazing. I manage to photograph the tag numbers of the cattle on the farm at a distance of 200 m very clear and the numbers are about 1 cm in size on the tags.

I would also suggest a Nikon P900. The zoom and picture quality is amazing.

What about a few trail cams set up around the areas they're stealing?

Canon SX70 (70x optical zoom) also good. SX50 is also good but older so you will get one cheaper if you're looking for a second hand cheapie instead of investing new. The performance of the two cameras is pretty close.

Haven't used the equivalent Nikons mentioned above, but online reviews are good and it's obviously a good brand.

I had a break in last December, nice video of thief looking up at camera before he pushed it the other way, court nailed him, he is sitting. No warnings to nobody that they are being filmed. Even CCMA accept a video I had to show as evidence in a different case.

If funds is available for the above it would be the route I would go. They should also be able to advise on the legalities of doing surveillance/ footage etc and will most probably handle the court cases also. That would be first prize I think?

I have been following this product and it works! https://www.facebook.com/spoorvatonline/ it takes a photo if movement is detected and send it straight to your phone. Video can also be stored on a SD card for viewing later.

We have caught a number of staff stealing on video and in all the instances none of the videos were admissible as evidence in court because it is apparently viewed as entrapment. I would consult a forensic detective to get the facts.
