Default 2012 Fortuner front wheel squeak

I’ve developed a weird squeak in the front of the Tuna, but it doesn’t always squeak, only starts after about 20km. Starts quiet and gets louder the longer I drive. It’s a rotational noise, picks up cadence as I go faster and stops when the car is stationary, even if the car is running. 4x4 Low doesn’t change anything. It sounds like front left but my son swears it’s in the centre (scary thought).

I though it might be brakes, replaced the pads before my Kruger trip, no change.

My feeling is that is heat related, that’s why it takes some time to start. Leads me to think wheel bearings but there’s no telltale rumble - is that still a thing?

And it’s been about 8000km, I’ve been a little busy.

Any ideas before I throw myself at the mercy of my Indi?

Could be a missing/worn out rubber on top of the shock?

Would that account for the sound being rotational and there even when sticks no on a very smooth surface?

Does your brakes still have the thin wire anti-rattle spring between the pads fitted?

No - not for a rotational source. Good luck with finding the culprit...

Jack up the wheel and turn it by hand. Also move wheel side ways to test for play. If it is a bearing you will feel it. My gut feeling says bearing

Update on this - just got back from a 5,000km round trip to Chobe, Hwange and Kubu, noise still there. Mentioned it to the farmer mate I was traveling with, his wife immediately remembered that it had happened to their previous Tuna and a farm Hilux. They eventually nailed it to the front 1/2 shaft seals. Makes sense, so Iíll be getting them replaced next week, will report success or disappointment.

Had the same on my D4D hilux. It can be the dust cover on the CV. It has a metal part inside the rubber boot. Toyota removed the metal part and all was well. Only the face lifted versions got the new boot/dust cover design.

We had this problem for a long time. It makes a chirri chirri noise but around 25km and up. The vehicle must be warm or it's not there so often hard to show the mechanic. After booking it into Toyota 4 times in succession to trouble shoot we found it was the prop shaft seal that needed replacing.
