    Default Prince Alfred Pass

Hi fellow folks, has anyone recently driven Prince Alfres Pass from Uniondale to Knysna that can give an update on road condition and is it safe to travel.

Thinking of taking a detour through it as it cuts roughly an hour drive versus going through George.

    Feedback will be appreciated

Although not recently, the road was in good nic about 12 months back.
S & W Cape are far safer than Gauteng ............... my wife and I often "bush camp" just off lesser travelled backroads.

The wife and I did it on the bike a couple of months ago. Road condition is quite good, if it rains, the logging trucks can make a mess of it. I almost bought a farm a couple of times!

    Bump on this.

Can I do it with a normal Ventertjie in tow? (Driving a 2.5 Isuzu 4x4).

Very, very corrugated on Knysna side for about 15 - 20 km then it becomes better. Just take it slow with the venter and I am sure it will be ok. I went through with my Chev Utility couple of months back. If I had to do it again, I would enter on Uniondale side, drive to the river down below and back, rather than driving all the way to Knysna.

    Personal preference.

We drove from Uniondale 18 months ago. Road conditions were fine. If you don't have fear of heights you'll be fine when another vehicle comes from the front. From the Uniondale side this usually means you have to move right on the edge (Skerpkant) of the road! An awesome drive!

I drove it in August, in a 4x2 SUV, at night, wasn't a problem, is a little narrow in some places. At knysna it does end up coming out in the side of a township but we never had a problem.

I highly doubt that you will get any time savings by coming down the pass but it is a way more scenic route. If you want to see more of the forest you can also turn right on to Kom se Pad at Diepwalle which pops out at Simola instead of Nekkies. You can also pop in at San Ambrosio church on Kom se Pad for the history of Italian silk farmers that tried to settle in Knysna.

FYI - there is a nice little shop at Buffelsnek that I'm sure would appreciate some support.
