The 2012 CRD was not a totally new design from the ground up chaps. VM bassed it off the pre 2012 CRD. I've owned both.

Thanks for all the advice chaps, I really struggled with this decision.

    But....

I did it any way. It was such a good deal and the Santa Fe was just too old.

I would have made the same decision if I had an old Hyundai CRD..........

I have been gleefully eyeing a 2012 Grand Cherokee CRDi for a while now. Ive done the financing application all approved etc. etc.

But..... I've been hearing now, how Jeeps are eye wateringly expensive to maintain, and if something breaks you're up a creek without a paddle, with no recourse but to ransom your house to a Nigerian prince so you can afford to drive it.

do I have motive to feel like this or is there more to the story.

(PS. my head says wait maybe, but my heart say's DO IT DO IT NOW!!! YOLO!!!)
Go drive a 5.7 Hemi first.
To know them is to love them.
You can get them so cheap you can buy another one for parts.
    I got one for 70 k.
The equivalent year Prado diesel would have been 280k.
Spent 40k to make it handle and new brakes and full service.
    Did all the work myself.
150k left over to buy gas vs the Prado.
And it will blow any diesel to pieces just on quarter throttle.
If you think a diesel has got torque you ain't felt nothing like a Hemi.
    Effortless power , anywhere,any hill.

What part of the VM A630 is based on the Merc OM642? Iron block vs Aluminium, 60 'V' vs. 72. They aren't related.

The A630 has its roots in pre-bankruptcy GM, who were co-developing it with VM Motori, who they part-owned with Fiat at the time. When GM filed for bankruptcy VM Motori were left with a half-done design that they really wanted to finish, and Chrysler said "yes please!".

Last year in Oct we bought a CRD 3.0 Overland Summit with 45k on the clock plus a full dealer service history. Our previous 2005 Jeep GC CRD had the WK Merc engine. We have used the Jeeps to tow our 2000kg caravan on many different roads and they have never faltered. If going for a Jeep get the Overland with the air suspension as it makes a big difference to the ride.

Some nice knowledge here. Do you know if and what links there are with the Land rover VM Motori motor from the same era in the Discovery 4? They have similar specs as well. Both even have the ZF 8 speed autobox (Jeep got it first).I really wanted the Jeep, but it wasn't 7 seater so we got the Land rover. I am happy, but would have liked to know how different is the maintenance between these two. Does look like the Jeep cost more to maintain, but also that the Jeep has no crank-snapping-sword over your head, which comes back to my first question, what gives? But on topic...OP: where is the pictures?

There was never a VM Motori motor in the Discos. That was a Ford/Peugeot joint venture and ended up being used in various Land Rover, Ford, Jaguar, Citroen and Peugeot models.

Again, i have owned both WK1 CRD and WK2 CRD, i have also done software on both, they drive the same, respond to software the same, sound the same, they even have the exact same merc box in both. VM Motori is owned by Chrysler...what do I know.

Anyway, the engine is good and for those of you saying its not. Go drive one, oh and FYI-
The engine won several awards including Ward's 10 Best engines of 2014 during its first model year of production in the Jeep &Ram. And has gone on for an unprecedented diesel 'repeat' winning Ward's Top 10 List again in 2015 and 2016.

Many happy miles my man, look after it and it should do the same to you

I don't think I said that, just said that the 2 are completely unrelated. I haven't heard bad things about the new one, certainly not the kind of horror stories you hear about the older VM Motoris anyway.

Enjoy your Jeep. It felt a lot nippier than the Disco. I think I need to go do software!

That may not be totally correct.VM Motori S.p.A. is an Italian diesel engine manufacturing company which is wholly owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles through its subsidiary Fiat Group Automobiles. VM headquarters and main production facilities are located in Cento, in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. In other words Fiat own Chrysler as Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in April 2009 and then FCA was created.
