    Default Is it worth it....?

    Hi there.

I'm hoping I can get some wise words of wisdom from the Jeep owners out there.
I have been gleefully eyeing a 2012 Grand Cherokee CRDi for a while now. Ive done the financing application all approved etc. etc.

But..... I've been hearing now, how Jeeps are eye wateringly expensive to maintain, and if something breaks you're up a creek without a paddle, with no recourse but to ransom your house to a Nigerian prince so you can afford to drive it.

do I have motive to feel like this or is there more to the story.

(PS. my head says wait maybe, but my heart say's DO IT DO IT NOW!!! YOLO!!!)

I am on my second diesel 3.0 CRD Jeep and they are magical. Granted if something goes wrong it will cost you, as will most diesels. Best advice i can give you is look for a low mileage example that has had ALL the services done. Purchase a decent aftermarket warantee and a top up plan if poss and then just look after the thing. I have done software on my CRD and it runs really well.

Ps, the 2012 is based off the older Merc motors that are still running around in many Mercs today. The Italians have tweaked it a bit but generally they are solid good engines, still in production in many different vehicles today still.

Only advise I can give, if you buy a nearly 1 Bar vehicle for a 5th of the price 7 years later, expect to pay for maintenance for a 1 bar car. This is not manufacturer specific.

You know that pretty girl at school you eyed until you just had to speak to her and then you eventually dated her and at first it was even more than you dreamed of but eventually reality set in and things didn't work out?

Hey, sometimes it works out but do you want to take the chance?

    I have a 2011 GC WK2 5.7 Hemi Overland.
Bought it for a great price. but as mentioned very very expensive to maintain. At this age and 150 000kms everything is needing replacement or maintenance at this stage.
a R150 000 quote from Jeep on items.

Quadralift air suspension all the pipes and bellows are perishing and starting to leak.
    Radiator hoses starting to leak
    Rear Prop Shaft
    Manifold Leaks
    Rear Diff actuator issues
    CATS blocked
    Control arms needed replacing

    all very very expensive.
Get a DECENT aftermarket warranty and a top up plan and you should be ok.
But make sure ALL services have been done. Make sure the vehicle is thoroughly checked before purchase by a competent Jeep mechanic.

It,s never a good idea to buy a jeep. I had two. Time comes to repair or sell them you will cry, that is a given. If you opt for petrol, you will shed a tear or two.

But every time you get behind the wheel you will smile, that I know.

Make sure about after market warranties and extended service plans if available and make sure you set a bit aside for unforseen things and enjoy it.

Full Service History with a Jeep Dealer or simply walk away. And check the service history using the VIN, never trust the book.

I'd rather get the Pentastar 3.6 V6 if i were you. But as rickJK says........that R1m vehicle will bite you later.

My first Grand Cherokee was the 3.7 V6. Never any problems in 3 years. Wanted more power, so in came the 5.7 hemi. after just over 3 years and on 184000km, I dont want to part with it. Yes, at this milage, had to replace a few items but had full history before I bought it so risk was lower. Also, know how to look after a hemi, it is different.
Show me a vehicle of similar specs and size that does not cost to keep in top condition?

Yes, go for a non Overland model, that doesnt have Quadra lift and the costs will be significantly lower. My warranty does not cover the bellow or shocks. Shocks are sold as a complete unit and are about 14k per front shock.
It covers the compressor which is almost never the problem. Bulli has sorted out 90% of the issues with my Jeep. He is a Jeep whisperer, and now that those issues are sorted i absolutely love the vehicle.

Unfortunately, there were only a few Limited model WK2 Jeeps brought in that dont have air suspension. I think all were 2011, 2012 and 3.6 V6 models, not sure if there were diesels without air suspension . The older WK models dont have air suspension.

Last week I finally managed to get rid of my 2012 JGC 3.6 Overland. I had it just under 4 years and it was fairly reliable except for the odd code it would throw now and again.

As has been mentioned, lovely car to drive and the 3.6 is a lovely motor but I couldn't afford a major expense if something popped.

A lot of the parts are available on Ebay etc at half the price though.

Not as sore as operating the door handle of a JK.

I loved my JK Rubi, but I totally understand.

    Not WK specific, BUT

I drive the 2.8 CRD Cherokee.

Yes it cost money, but the replacement is monthly a lot vs the few times inbetween that it hits you.
I import MOPAR parts for most of my repairs at a better price than local.
I can do most repairs, but have someone in Theresapark I trust to work on the vehicle.
Although I am married to the KJ, I do not intend to sell it. When co-workers sees it and say they want it, I make a ridiculous price (R150k)
It is mine, I can ask what I want.

Hopefully one day I can join in a 2015 model GC Overland CRD.
