Default How to remove ball-joints on Jimny swatbar

After a day of spirited off-roading in the Jimny, I noticed the one ball-joint link of the swaybar hanging loose. On inspection, I saw the bracket on the axle has broken in halve. Easy weld job, but I would like to remove the ball joint part from the sheared off bracket before welding. How does one undo the nut on the ball-joint? Turning the nut just turns the complete bolt/ball, and I see no flat spots next to the ball to hold the bolt part with a spanner. The rubber shield is still OK so I do not want to remove this only to find still no flat surfaces for a spanner. I see some manufacturers have a Torx hole on the end of the bolt but there seems to be none on my Jimny.

That nut should be quite easy to turn. So use a 1mm disc and cut a slot. Then hold with a screwdriver

Tik hom met die hammer aan die balljoint kant om die taper te laat vas sit, of Henris se raad

    Gladde kante.

Wees versigtig om hom vas te tik. Daardie agterkant is net 'n dun plaatjie.

You will find that there are 2 flat surfaces 14mm flat spanner fits it.

Oeps, never thought of that. Yes, from Jimny Bits. Got them for when I get to a swaybar disconnect as I think the OEM line could pop without them. They were even strained with the swaybar still connected on full extension. The limiting part now is the shocks, it seems. Time for limiting straps.

    50mm EFS kit.

Thanks for the 14 spanner advice. It still was a mission as it is difficult to see where the two flats are. But at last, it is out. Now to weld the bracket back. Would one need to drain the diff oil from the axle before burning rods?

    Just the opposite....
Fill the diff with as much oil as you can as this will help keep the housing cool while you weld.
Weld in small sections and let it cool on its own before you weld the next small section.
This will help limit the distortion caused by the welding.

Change the oil once you have finished

And keep a fire extinguisher on hand.....

Donít weld towards a particular side eg. Left to right, or right to left.

Weld small piece here, then another to the opposite, this will also limit distortion.

Thanks, guys. I much appreciate the advice. Wooky, that makes sense using the oil as a heat sink.

The welding of the bracket has now moved to a lower priority. I traveled to Oudtshoorn and back on Friday and went wheeling on Sunday. The stability of the Jimny is definitely worse on the open road but by very little. I can live with it. The articulation, however, is much better without the swaybar.

None of my 3 Jimny's and SJ had/have anti-roll bars. I'm still alive after 26 years of driving without them. And the articulation is awesome.
