Greetings from Oranjemund..!
I have traveled the section from Oranjemund to Luderitz many times.
To give an idea ~
From Oranjemund you would travel inland on a good road, parallel to the coast (10km to 20km away) for a distance of just over 100km to a place called chameis. Fairly monotonous scenery of rolling hills with groups of Gemsbok.
From chameis you turn to the coast and this is where the scenery becomes more interesting. You get to Fort reef which was a mining camp operated by Sammy Collins in the early days of sea mining ~ there is a book about him, worth the read.
Carrying on north, the track follows the coast with some challenging 4x4 driving at times. Beautiful bays like dreimaster, bakers and others are passed with the odd guano island visible offshore. Of interest is that some of this area was mined fairly recently, but unless you tell visitors they are going through an old mining area, they will not know. The mining company has done a very good job of rehabilitating this area.
Carrying on, you pass large seal colonies with almost a guaranteed sight of a strand wolf (brown hyena) or 5.
Getting closer to bogenfels, which is the southern limit of the current tourism access, you go across vast salt pans which hold significant danger if you are not familiar with the route.
The total distance of this coastal section is about 50km. It is a very sensitive area and access would always have to be guided because of the sensitive environment and risks in driving it ~ salt pans, gravel plains with unique plants, seal colonies, sand dune sea to drive through etc.
The mining industry often gets a deservedly bad rap for the damage that is caused but I think if you visit this area you will see (or rather not see) the positive legacy of rehabilitation and the effect of 100 years of restricted access!
If this area opens up, it would be worth the cost and effort to see it!
This is def on the bucket list.
Thanks.
