Default Land Cruiser 79 Diff Repair

Dear all, I‘m from Germany and I own a fully equiped 2014 79 Land Cruiser 4.2. I keep the car in Midrand and we usually come to SA 2-3 times a year and we go to the bush. I became a father for the first time and we havn‘t been to SA for a year. Now we are coming for 3 month in mid December.

My parents in law arrived yesterday and take the car for the next 4 weeks to Kruger etc. Before they wanted to start the did a service at Toyota. The don‘t speak english too well so I do all the comunication. As the front diff was leaking a little Toyota needed to seal it. Now I received the following mail:

    Good day Philipp
    Hope you are keeping well
We are currently busy with your vehicle and we wanted to re-seal the diff but
There is a problem my manager had a look at the diff on your vehicle and if we re-seal the diff there is a great possibility that it will leak again
So this vehicle needs a diff over haul the cost is R8968.90 excluding keep sealing the diff is not going working We picked up that there is a bolt
Broken inside the diff as well we need this vehicle for two days to complete this repair.

Does that make sense and is the price normal for a front diff overhaul?

Can you recommend a good workshop in Midrand/Johannesburg area?

    Many thanks in advance!

There was a problem at one stage with the welding on the front diff housings. There were also a recall on the front diffs. Think you should find out if your Cruiser were not due for the recall.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

Good advice from Grips, I have a 2015 which had its front diff replaced under recall.

Still a problem even on the new cruisers. Rear diff casing cracks on the rear of the centre portion, and the front diff usually cracks around the studs along the top of the casing where the centre portion goes in.

We usually do a few mods to stop this from happening, but I doubt the diff needs to be overhauled. It's usually just hairline cracks which need to be fixed. Is there not a Indy which can check it out for you?

Only some of the Cruisers made in Purtugal ( VIN starts with TW ) had the front diff recall , and that had to do with improper fixing of the bolts on the diffhousing. If there is a hairline crack a Toyota dealer will normally replace the whole diff housing , that will cost a lot more than the amount quoted! on the other hand a diff overhaul will definitely also cost more than that , so I think they are not telling the whole story here.

I'd try find a diff/gearbox specialist and get a 2nd opinion before you do anything.

    Wouldn't trust toyota outright.
Ask them for pictures of what they're talking about as well.

And check if your vin is part of a recall below.

This seem to be the replacement of the kingpin, sideshaft seal and dust seals. It is in the service scedule around 200k km. At least it was on the solid diff Hiluxes.

79 Land Cruiser diff does not have Kingpins, maybe the Knuckle bearings ?

Sorry, thats what meant. Swivel hub bearings and all the seals and stuff that you have in that diagram. Quite a big job.

Replacing diff casing would be way more expensive.
