    Default Kgalagadi in December

    Yes, you heard me.

Am I mad to attempt it, or will it be worth it?
New work circumstances dictates that I can only do long trips in December and January.

Has onyone camped in Kgalagadi in December/January?
I know it is crazy hot, so how do you deal with the heat without power?

90+ percent of my trips to the Kalahari have been in December / January. It's a fantastic time to go, you get used to the heat very quickly.

It helps if you like beer.

Done it twice. Once Rooiputs and once Mabua. Mabua was really tough, saw temps touching 50 with a hot wind and of course no swimming pool.

I would definitely do it again.

As EHoffman says, spray bottle and I would also suggest small USB fans inside the tent.

    And strong pegs.

    No Kalahari thunderstorms.

Soil is generally soft and sandy, small pegs just pull out.

Some people swear by the maxcon pegs but we use the largest storm pegs available. It is those with the 90 degree bend in.

Are you wanting to go this December? If so I am afraid you will not have much luck with openings. Nossob has no campsites available after the 15th of December, Mata-Mata basically the same. There are some odd camp sites open at TR. Best is to go on the Sanparks online availability check.

Trailers are fine on any of the main routes on the SA side.

We will be going this year. Dec 20th to 29th, super excited. First time to Kgalagadi at this time of the year.

One thing I have noticed is that window tinting helps keep the heat down in the car a lot. Unfortunately for my passengers I drive with the window open. A nice awning/gazebo is crucial.

When we were in the Delta last year at the same time we bought one of those steel water baths, chucked it on the roof of the Landy and had a portable dip-pool. Water wasn't a problem though as we just filled some water cans from the rivers.

    Cheers

We actually made our booking last week Friday and I had to reroute a few times to suit open dates. The SA side was fully booked for almost the whole Dec, along with DWNP @ Rooiputs and Polentswa. But I got space at a few places on the Bots side pretty easily.

But there are plenty people who don't pay their deposits on time and then the sites become available so take a chance.

For your requirement of electricity and swimming pool, you can choose any of the SA camps namely Twee Rivieren, Mata-Mata or Nossob. No trailer restrictions or one ways travelling between them.

Just take note that Nossob have no electricity from 23h00 until 6h00. IIRC Mata -Mata is,the same.

Thanks. I see some of the 4x4 routes have to be booked. Is it restricted to a certain number of vehicles per day? Can I book a year in advance or is it first come first serve basis? Is there additional costs involved, and if so, is it worth it?
