    Gevaarlik!

so we have watched many youtube videos on kgalagadi, and it is definately on! Will be going Jan 2021, we have a few more days than in December. Then we can take the scenic route back and stop over an extra day.

I will upgrade my Ranger base this December to a Supercab XL 4x4. Pretty damn expensive for what you get though.

    Talking Re: Kgalagadi in December

Heading to KTP next weekend (1 Dec) for the first time! More than excited... we have been wanting to go there for quite a while.
Can't take too much in Tokoloshe, so we are treating this as a scouting trip for a bigger outing early next year.
    Aiming to take:
    LOTS of water
    Some fuel
pop-up tent (lightweight, and good for baking bread)
    food
    cadac
basic recovery kit (but not planning any heavy duty offroad... going for the wildlife)
inReach to drop breadcrumbs for friends to drool over.
    some other odds and ends.
Will be staying at TR, Nossob, Grootkolk and Mata Mata. Probably too much moving around, but we'll manage.
Come say "hi" if you see us, probably won't be too many white Jimnys around.

Geniet

Then there are the Gharagab, Bitterpan and !Xaus 4x4 trails. Also one ways, but only as access for the residents of those camps. Again no trailers and you cannot just drive them as a game viewing track.

The only 4x4 trail which you can do is Leeuwdril. Quite mild but more than one vehicle is preferable. No extra cost, you just need to go to TR and tell them you want to do the trail now and they will give you permit or baton which you need to hand back in so that they know you made it.
Afaik it costs R 180 to drive the Leudril 4*4 route.

Hi, we went to Mabuasehube and camped at Khiding pan from 4th Nov to 6th Nov 2019. The hottest day was 43 degrees. You definitely should have lots of drinking water, a spray bottle, cooling towel, small cooling fan for your tent at night. A fridge and cold beer on your vehicle will also not be a bad idea. Just a reminder, take lots of water with for your shower. The heat was worth it, we had ample lion sightings and a lioness and hyena in the camp one night.

    Don't know about December
    Just been there early Nov.
Went on on the Nossob 4x4 Echo Trail.
    Well guided and interesting.
    Saw plenty.
Temps forecast up to 39 degrees C.
Some actuals touching 45 degrees C.
On the trail camping sites sandy.
Tent flattened two out of three nights
by gusty winds even though I had better
    than standard pegs.
(Info about where to get bigger pegs would be welcome).

December may bring some rains but still very hot.

Off the trail, camping sites either too hard to drive
smaller pegs in, or too sandy to hold them in the
    wind.

Roads, even between main camps alternate between
very sandy and very hard and corrugated stoney.

Pressure gauge, and especially on the 4x4 trails
a compressor would be useful as it is recommended
to deflate tyres even on the main roads to about
1.6 Bars and on the trails and dunes down to 1.2
    and even 0.8 Bars.

Vibrations on some roads are sol bad that a pair
of clear multi-focal spectacles I had resting on
the dash board developed incurable lens damage.
(The similar sunglasses not so, as they were
    resting on my nose).

Maps of the Kgalagadi are no longer available
from SANPARKS. The best one I was able to
get was a Shell one (no date of publication
disclosed), which I obtained from an
    Outdoors Warehouse.

Except for marginal cell phone and data connectivity
in TR, the only limited connectivity is available
through Wi-Fi bundles you can buy at TR, Nossob
and Mata Mata. I suspect the Mata Mata one is
probably riding on MTC Namibia, because staff
members I spoke to at Mata Mata were personally
    using MTC sim cards.

It follows that if you want to use GPS navigation
you either have to rely on dedicated GPS, or
use offline navigation apps and download the
relevant maps, or, Google Maps, with previously
    downloaded offline maps.

Please make sure your vehicle is thoroughly
tested before you go to the KTFP, as the nearest
vehicle service and repair facilities are in
Upington, which is 250 km from TR.

In the case of a breakdown AA membership
would be of very limited use as they cover
only the first 100 km of a tow truck return
trip meaning from TR to Upingotn only
    100/500 km.

Even if you are covered by a service plan
and or extended warranty, you may find that
unless you have good insurance cover, in
case of breakdown you you may have to cart
your vehicle huge distances before it can be
    repaired.

Nearest Land rover service facility is at
    Bloemfontein. Nearest Chrysler Jeep
    service agent is in Kimberley.

Thus, regardless of your personal preferences
this is mainly a Toyota territory.

Was in KTP in December last year for 4 days. One day at Twee Rivieren and 3 days at Mata Mata. Both camps have swimming pools, shops, fuel stations.

There is more shade at the Mata Mata camp sites than Twee Rivieren. Twee Rivieren has better shops, swimming pool etc. If I go back I would rather be at Mata Mata for the shade. We had shade most of the day in the camp site, but we spent all day out anyway.

As mentioned by a few people the sudden storms come with spectacular gusts of wind. We had the tent tipped over once, but I had not put the pegs in yet. Once the pegs were in there were no issues.

Remember to take adaptor for electricity points. They are available at the shops as well.

It's hot, yes. There is also a lot of glare from the light colour sand.

We found the roads to be generally quite okay with the nissan patrol, although there are some heavily corrugated sections. We did not venture into Botswana as it is reportedly very sandy.

Personally, I rate KTP very highly. I would rather go there than Kruger but for the distance to get there (my personal opinion, both parks are fantastic).

December is the best time to go in my opinion. Daily predator sightings, great raptor sightings. The three main camps have swimming pools. Those silver reflector covers for caravans and tents work well. Drape a wet bath towel over your camp chair to sit on. A fan creates a bit of movement. Spray bottle. Take extra pollen filters for the aircon in the car. I thought the aircon was starting to leak until I checked the filer, it had a sand dune of powdered dust caked to it. Blew it clean with an air hose andthe aircon worked again!!!! They are cheap so take spares with you. The park was usually empty during this time due to the heat, but seems a lot of kgalagadi freaks have cottoned on to this and the park is quite busy this time of the year now. One great plus is that at 50deg the flies die!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy, I'll be there from end Dec to middle Feb........
