Default Whats the best LDV/bakkie engine on the market now?

Ive been thinking of what might be the best engine for workhorse/double cab now on the market.
    The criteria is simple:
    It must be durable/reliable.
    It must be economical.
Parts must be easy to source.
I must have enough power to overtake a vehicle going 110kph safely.
It must be available in a workhorse, meaning that although BM and Merc make GREAT diesel motors, they dont qualify for this.
    It must be diesel.

What would you guys say? It must be currently available.
Lots of engine would tick some of the boxes(like the 1HZ, but it loses out on power and economy.

    Shoot...

Dis die down tuned 2,4.

Dit dalk rede hoekom daardie platbakkies so lekker hardloop.

Maar daai papper 2,4 voel of 'n miljoen gaan doen.......

2.8GD6 and you will still see 10 to 11km/l at 120.

OK, have you factored the ECU in? How are you going to do engine management on one of these without a cracked OEM ECU?

Do you have the electronics background to be able to use an OEM ECU and provide all the inputs needed.

If not, are you then narrowing your choice to a simpler old school ECU (minimal inputs) or even non-ECU?

    Jelo, no rebuildt or transplant.

I would go Toyota 2.4 GD6 or the Isuzu KB250 but I think next year Isuzu's new 1.9 is going to be a winner.

I would put the 75KW Austrian AVL 2.5L TD engine as found in the Mahindra Bolero and older generation Pik Up up there with any other mechanically injected TD in terms of durability. The same engine with common rail injection and uprated power/ torque figures does service in the Thar

Likewise I have been massively impressed by the 104KW 2.2 Mahindra MHawk engine in my current vehicle and have not read or heard any horror stories about reliability on these units. This engine is very smooth and quiet, gives good economy and pulls hard from low RPM.

Both these engines have been in production for quite some time with the MHawk having been refined continuously since the original 80 odd KW units came out more than 10 years ago.

Longevity of an engine is dependent on more than just the brand. I don't think there are many poorly designed light commercial diesel engines still on the market today, I do think many of the so-called issues one hears about are user caused, either through abuse or negligence when it comes to maintenance.

Ek moet se ek is nogal hewig beindruk met my GD2.8.
