Oh no! My deepest sympathies to our farmers. This is really a tough year to be a farmer. I'm sure it will be contained quickly.

That's going to hammer cash flow, pity the guys that were planning around getting liquidity from stock auctions just as this was announced, best of luck to farmers in the affected areas

Just to add to the first post, I got this from netwerk24

There is evidence that the strain (remember there are plenty strains for this illness) for the current Molemole outbreak is the same one as with the Vhembe outbreak
This proves that no measurements were put in place to prevent the spread from Vhembe to other areas.
There is evidence that the roadblocks were stopped too early that lead to the spread of the disease. So the dept is lying that control measurements are in place.
It is also evident that no roadblocks has been put up in the Molemole district since the outbreak 2 weeks ago.

I am a cattle farmer and have spoken to my neighbor this afternoon and they are devastated about the fact that NO auction can take place in Northwest province apart from the other provinces mentioned. The guys stocked the auctions with cattle the last 2 weeks to sell cattle as soon as possible and that also made a large ditch in the selling price the guys are not happy and they sense that this moratorium will probably be in place for the next 2 months. Remember traditionally it is now big selling time for the christmas period.

Tough, very tough. This is only 50% of the story:

You canít sell your stock, so you have to keep on feeding. At something like 90 ton feed per week when the feed runs at R2800 a ton or thereabouts.

I think the loss is around 100k a day if all is reckoned.

Thats on a small feedlot of around 2500 cattle. Just consider the big guys.

So today in the Government Gazette, total ban on sale of beef until further notice.

This was speculated a couple of weeks ago:

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Thoko Didiza has gazetted a national ban on gathering cloven-hoofed animals, including livestock auctions, shows and similar activities.
Can't find anything on government website though

But you can sell directly to a buyer. Just not on an auction. But yes, most cattle is sold on auctions.

Drive through any small town and you'll see large herds grazing in the informal settlement, on the surrounding areas and even in town on pavements (because we don't maintain those any more either)

These animals get no vaccinations, no additional feed (reducing their resistance to disease) and there are no fences keeping them where they should be. They drink from the same spruit where the municipality dumps the raw sewerage because the treatment plant has been plundered.

I am firmly of the opinion this is one of the major reasons for this outbreak.

Every Saturday on the road from Heilbron to Van der Bijl you will see a train of FU'd bakkies with even more FU'd trailers taking these animals to auction - easy to spread the disease from there.

I seriously hope the Auction houses saved that 8% comm because this will be the next industry to fall with subsequent job losses.

I doubt this. The reason for the moratorium on auctions is to prevent the mix (spread) of disease. If you sell directly to a buyer or buy directly from the seller and the cattle is moved from one area to the other the chance are there for disease spread. You see this quite often where cattle are being moved over some distance (not talking about the ones going to abattoir or feedlot) The law states that at every auction there must be a state vet to check for any exterior evidence of disease and a police officer that checks if the animals are properly marked. This is not happening or happens on a very small scale. If the said vet officer were on site (auction) then a spread of F&M can be prevented.

Not quite. You can apply to the office of the State Vet. They inspect the life stock and issue a certificate. Thats how I have it.

But the fact is no abattoir will buy right now.
