    Default Pongola to Sodwana Bay

    Hi

Traveling to Sodwana Bay on 27 December. Haven't been there since around 2010. We're travelling from Pretoria, but from Pongola to Sodwana there are three route options

Back in the day, we always took the Jozini route and then via Ntshongwe (the top route on the picture). Google Maps is currently recommending the bottom route through Phinda (D424 Rd) if I query for a route from Pretoria, but recommends the Jozini route if I query from Pongola.

Any advice or tips will be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I used the Jozini route. It is not tarmac everywhere but safe.

I've done both within the last 18 months. Both will get you there. Top road is a bit quicker but more gravel (albeit excellent gravel road)
Play it by the weather? If its dry, take the top. And if it's very wet, then definitely take the top and have some fun...

To be honest, I would just go via Hluhluwe.

Jozini can be a nightmare to get through, especially this time of year. The second route is through Phinda Game reserve where a 40km/h speed limit applies.

I agree with the agreed, and prefer the preferred.

Having said that, I was involved in an accident on that almost 50km of gravel. Nissan 1400 bakkie swerved across the road and I whacked him head on. That was quite a few years ago but the gravel section is mostly good and travels well. Just be cautious, lots of animals on the road as well.

If you are towing a boat or traveling on the 5th of January the day before everyone starts working again I would take the Hluhluwe road instead.

Just back from Tembe. We went the Hluhluwe route - slow with goats, traffic circles and speed bumps BUT those that went the Jozini route were held up (sorry, delayed ) for at least half an hour getting through the town and holiday shoppers.
