    Default Puma 90

    Hi all

I recently had a head Gasket job done on my 90. At the same time I put an alarm system in.

The alarm goes off all the time even on start up when engine is cold but Im more concerned about having to fill up the bottle every day or two with up to 1.5 litres of water. Ive taken it back twice only to be told that there is nothing wrong and that its just summer and we are using the aircon too much.

This does not sound right to me. Any advise would be appreciated.

    Regards

When you fill up the water do you only fill it to the full mark? If you go over it will push out through the overflow.

If it uses 1.5 litres a week something is definately wrong. Have you checked if the water and oil are mixing?

When its sorted please use antifreeze instead of water.

    Thanks FWM

Yes only filling the bottle to the full mark, fill until we can just feel the water with a finger inserted into the bottle.I do use antifreeze as often as I can

How do you check if oil and water are mixing.

    Regards

Simply pull out the dipstick and check if the oil is while. Otherwise you can also start the car and check for bubbles in the water bottle.

    If that happens head gasket=gone.

Also check if you dont have a leaking water pipe because when they leak they drip on the hot engine and evaporates.

Please get a new mechanic becaue one that says youre are using the a/c too much and thats the reaseon for your water loss is a nonsenseteerr of note

My Puma was using water especially under load such as when towing. Was acceptable for a long time but recently got worse so not being brave enough to tackle a Puma head off I took it to Walter at LR Xtreme. He confirmed the head gasket was the problem and did the replacement. He also replaced the water pump and thermostat and told me that numerous times after doing the head gasket the water pump failed within days so now he does it as a matter of course. So check your water pump. If it is not that I suspect the job was not done correctly and the head or head gasket is still the problem.

Sorry man that is not right and has nothing to do with summer. You are losing 1.5 liters of water a day after a head gasket replacement.

One or two things have happened , the head is cracked, or the head is over skimmed and if so Land Rover or aftermarket does not have an oversize gasket. There are three gasket sizes that are used at assembly time according to the piston protrusion. Land Rover do not recommend head skimming at all. That is why if your car overheated in warranty Land Rover replaced the whole engine.

Was it an Indy or a pamphlet workshop that did the job.

Tgwinduna actually it was Mom dont forget the Melrose and it was I call everything I love Wedwo.

Thanks for your input. The vehicle is back with the Indy (not a pamphlet workshop) who did the repair and I need to give him a second chance to get it right. I really hope it is not either of the 2 issues you indicate. I will update as I get more info.

I spoke to the indy working on the vehicle today. He picked up a cracked/leaking pipe to the vehicle heating system. With my limited knowledge this could make sense. Would you agree?

    Correct it was Melrose.
Phew very possible and awesome if that was the cause for losing water.

Appreciate your response. Thinking back to when the head gasket blew in July my son who was driving the vehicle at the time said that the he had just switched on the heater for the first time this winter and shortly after that the car ground to a halt. With my lack of experience I paid no notice to this statement and gave him hell for not checking the water in the radiator. I guess I owe him and apology.

Wedwow, I am not sure if the leaking pipe to the heater element is quite the correct story. I might be missing the story, BUT if it was a leaking pipe to the heater or heater element, you would smell it inside the car or see wet patches inside the car or outside the car. Just my 2c worth.

Hi, no not exactly. that would apply if the leak was in the car and the heater would have to be on for the water to flow through the matrix.
The Puma has a hard plastic pipe going through the fan box and on it is a plastic elbow with a bleed screw, that elbow does get brittle and cause issues.
