Not the best screen shots from the video I took, but this was a proper road train Saffer style. Vehicle was a G Class AMG (think it was a G63) and it was towing a massive double axle caravan as well as a massive double axle trailer. Just wondering what he possibly brought back from vacation that could not fit into that caravan! Click image for larger version.

Yes. N1 North. Luckily the wind was not so bad today as I would imagine that would be a nightmare in a cross wind. I wonder at what speed he towed. And again what his fuel economy would have been...

He was running at 110 km/h.

I was amazed at how little traffic there was - I had my "sit at the toll booths for a long time" mindset on. Was pleasantly surprised.

Cross winds probably has less of an affect on a double axle caravan than a single axle caravan, so he should be okay in fairly strong winds. What is not okay is that the trailer does not seem to have run in brakes as the law requires which is a common transgression of these road train drivers.

His fuel economy must be interesting as you mentioned.

agreed that run in brakes would be beneficial. But having towed a few road trains before, as long as the caravan is significantly heavier than the venter, and the vans brakes are working well, itís should be okay.

Indeed. We decided two years ago that it's not worth charging down to the coast and charging back up. We take it slow over three days and explore!

"Moonbuggy" Venter trailers had run in brakes on both axles as a standard.

Very bad accident at the N1, N4 split in Pretoria this morning. Audi station wagon went in sideways into a route marker pylon. I can't see how the driver and occupants survived the impact. That car must have been going at a tremendous speed. Maybe aquaplaned as it was raining heavily this morning.

Also thought as much. Not the most elegant solution to a problem and taking the wheel off is going to take a while.
