    Default Gearbox question.

I have a ford ranger single cab with a five speed gearbox. Most single cab 2,2 t6 bakkies have a six speed gearbox. Will it be a direct swop from 5 speed to six speed or do you think ford have thrown a curve ball in to make this impossible.?

    Some factors:

    - bellhousing bolt patterns
    - crossmember location
    - length of propshaft/s
    - gear lever location

    Go for it.

Jelo why I ask is because the five speed gearbox is far less common than the six speed box. I need a new gearbox and dont quite know how to tackle this. I find it is like pulling out molars when it comes to getting info from Ford.

I was told the five speed was used in some bmws.
This pic shows my dilema. Happened from changing a brake light globe. I should stay away fron diy.

You're not coming near my plumbing either.

It's worth a try. Just don't DIY the solution.

    - If the ENGINES are the same, the BELLHOUSINGS must be the same.
    - There is a good chance the BUS interface will be similar, so your speedo should still work
    - gearbox crossmembers usually come with the gearbox, make sure you get that with the box

the rest can be sorted with time & money

Maybe start by finding a 6-speed: any importer or second hand spares place will understand exactly what you're trying to do and can add advice.

Is that only casing damage from external or did the internal go bust.

If only casing it can be repaired by a skilled welder

Plunger, while all of the physical components might match, just check the EMS for compatibility.

If the EMS is set up to recognise 5 gears and now you have a 6th, there could be issues. This would be more relevant to autos than manuals but just check anyhoo.

Its cracked on both sides of the split in the gearbox. Its actually split through the bolt hole as well so would take some exceptional welding.

Jelo I am an exceptionally talented plumber ,so much so I find it hard to remain humble . But these new car systems stump me . Whats a bus?I just hope nothing happened to the engine as well. Is that possible.
What happened is I was changing a brake light globe and left the lights on. I was rushing to fetch guys and the battery went flat and so I could only go one way and that was backward. I crash started it in reverse and this is what happened.
I like old fashioned cars. This ford is like a sheep in wolfs clothing. Looks macho but is soft. This gearbox has already been changed.
Does anyone know in Durban who I could try.?

Aha - that's where it went wrong - someone did not fasten/torque all bolts or something correctly/properly. Starting in reverse gear cannot break the internals but twisting that whole drive-line form diff to engine with something not properly in place can

I'd say fix it and get rid of the POS. Any gearbox that breaks because you bump-started it is total shyte.

I don't know of anybody in Durban. But I'd say Pinetown would be a good place to start Googling.

How that could happen is above me, how did you manage that by changing a bulb?
Edit: Ah, OK, I see in later post. Never bump start in 1st, 2nd, or reverse, old old lesson learned on the farm as a child.

Funny you mention push starting in reverse. I have been watching a show on YouTube where they have bought a 20 year old Land Cruiser and are rebuilding it. One of the things was the gearbox that had a problem in reverse. When they opened up the gearbox. The specialist still said the worst thing you can do with gear box is push start it in reverse.

Watching the same channel. Must say that I did not know this about push starting in reverse. Lesson learned thanks to Paul Marsh and Andrew St Pierre White, can't remember which episode it was though. And now looks like maybe 1st an 2nd should be added based on previous comments.

Ive been push starting vehicles in reverse all my life. I didnt expect this too happen. I got to say that Im the kind of guy that feels uncomfortable if Im in a car that I battle to fix myself. I usually drive my cars for real long but I would feel uncomfortable going on a long trip in this thing. The other day it went into limp mode on the way to the berg and then after restarting it a couple of times never did it again.

I think these new cars need a different approach. Buy some piece of mind for five years and then sell and buy another five years and so on.

I can't tell you the amount of times I had to bump start my Jetta 2 in reverse and second. There was an electrical gremlin that run my battery flat every single day. I made sure I parked on an incline so I can roll forward or backwards in order to bump start it. Probably did it for close to a month before we finally found the problem and solved it. So did gearboxes become that soft?

Remember Diesel engines have more than twice the compression of a petrol engine....so the strain on the gearbox internals when push starting is much higher than a petrol engine......

Ah, ok, thanks for that. Didn't think about the fuel type, and have never bump started a diesel as all diesels I own are auto.
