Default Etios for Daughter - Still a Good Buy??

Die Skoenmaker vra vandag watse skoene hy moet koop

I see the Etios has had a spec change, and on offer at TSA at R 162 000. That's for the 1,5 Hatch, the Base Model.

I'd like to buy my daughter something for next year when she is studying.

Must be reliable, as safe as can be, and as economical as can be.

I also want it as "tough"as can be to handle potholes and occasional gravel.

..........what else is there, in the form of a new car for a girl??

I must say, I'm leaning towards Toyota. Pal of mine is at Cartrack, and they are VERY happy with the reliability of those.

But yes, NOT the best looking car out there.........must say.

IMO you can get a 'nicer' or more refined elsewhere but the Toyota track record should be considered, a mate of mine has had one since they came out - no issues and engine is actually very nice, also speak to Uber drivers - very few issues.

Agree it ain't the prettiest or most luxurious etc but I had one as a rental for a week, did a bit if dirt road driving etc and it was a good, solid little car.

Better than a Figo or Vivo I think.

And if you can wait a bit - it's getting way better looking https://www.cars.co.za/motoring_news.../#.WLUfYhJ95E4

Andrew yes, I am talking about the new facelift. It's already on the floors.

Nice little car........took one for a spin this morning. Typical Toyota - nothing "Wow", but does the job.

And she needs a car that can do gravel, at least for the rest of the year, almost daily. Next year is different - much less gravel then. But I still want something "tough".

    Die goed is DUUR!!!!!!

Look at the VW Up! also, had one for a few days and was pleasently surprised. Very spacious and economical and well built. Feels decidedly more upmarket than the Etios.

Up!...................................nice, small for luggage/books, "cute", wont work on that Plaaspad, feels expensive for what you get

Polo Vivo...........................reliable, enough space, good resell, wont work on Plaaspad

Suzuki...............................havent really looked, but I do like the brand. Bad resell.

Etios..................................fresh specs, enough space, reliable, will work on Plaaspad

Kia Picanto.........................nice, but other alternatives, no Plaaspad.

    Hyundai i10/20...................same as Picanto

    Datsun...............................No Go

    Renault Kwid.......................cute, unsafe.

Sandero...............................reliable, good Grondpad, but not above Polo or Etios.

Ford Figo..............................nice, but expensive against rivals.

    Chev Spark...........................nice, but just dunno.

Many of these come with ESP, etc. (I do realise it is a bit more (R30k or so) than your figure, but then you do get some more car as well.)

    Hi Petri

Have you considered anything from the Kia/Hyundai stable? 7 Year 200 000km warranty.

I know a few owners of both brands who are both happy with the vehicle and service received (obviously this depends very much on the dealer).

Picanto is still only R129 995 out of the box!

    Good luck!

This!!! For the love of all that is holy, DON'T! We take accident damaged cars apart and put them back together again on a daily basis. I cannot think of a single vehicle that is made of worse quality materials and with worse fit and finish than maybe a 2004 Tata Indica. The Etios is a horrid POS. Finish en klaar. Even with your normal Toyota blinkers you should be able to see past the Etios. I have put about 2500km on my Sandero now and I must say I love it more every day. It is a hoot to drive, decent handling, solid, safe and with more kit on it than most cars costing 3x as much. Can you even spec the Etios with 4 airbags, ESP, hill start assist, cruise control, speed limiter, etc? There's a R7k difference between the Expression and Dynamique. Get the latter. All in for R173 900. You cannot buy more car for the money even if you tried.
