Default Silly Season 2019... what does this mean to you?

So its official. Madness has ensued. Iím curious, after scrolling The Whoís Camping thread and have booked a camping trip only to have to cancel due to the demands placed on our shop, how crazy is it for you this year so far?

I love Christmas but it's too early! It should only start sometime in November...

Its part of the ritual to celebrate pagan traditions earlier and earlier in the year. Disgusting i say!

    no

Conventionally, Christmas decorations should only be put up after 1 December. But these bloody malls start earlier and earlier every year. Like I said, RUBBISH MARKETING. And 98% of the time there aren't any bargains ANYWAY.

Year on year decorations come out mid October. Nothing new.

Itís actually brilliant marketing if you sit back and realise what the end game is.... get mommy to spend more money earlier.

Most retailers have already given us their Black Friday orders for delivery ASAP.

Itís getting earlier and earlier every year - all to make you spend the few cents you have from slogging the whole year with shop a as opposed to shop b.

It amazes me how a vast part of the global population have their brains near switched off, the people that this kind of marketing is directed at and whom by their behaviour facilitate it.

    Truly they are sheep.

Putting out Christmas decorations and the like months in advance is often more about logistics.

For example, if you manufacture Christmas crackers or Easter eggs, the event window is very narrow. JIT manufacturing definitely does not work for these items! I am sure Estee would make a better job of explaining it than I can.

But Black Friday and the like are more about parting the consumer from his money. And the longer you have to attempt it, the more successful you are likely to be. I guess logistics in terms of storage space also plays a part.

After Christmas / January sales are seldom just about moving the excess lines that have not sold well. A huge part of it is stuff bought in specifically to sell on the sales. Generally of a slightly simpler design and lower quality. My two years of Diensplig and three years of audit articles were a real eye opener in terms realise that the world does not necessarily operate according to the more genteel and middle class standards of my upbringing.

Personally, I can't believe all the negativity I am reading on the forum

This time of the year just reminds me:

    1. How privileged I am to be able to contemplate spending this time with my family
    2. How privileged I am to be able to teach my daughter about the miracle that is the master teacher
    3. That I can actually contemplate spending some money on gifts
    4. That St Nicklaus actually comes before Christmas
    5. That I can combine both our German, Afrikaans and English traditions this year
    6. That I will get to meet my nephew this Christmas

Yes, it is silly season. people try to take advantage of shoppers. So what

Not crazy at all, never has been, never will be. Bah humbug

I donít need some silly holiday period to tell me when to spend my money or spend time with my family. I do that when I feel like it. I do not buy into the hype.

I donít see the comments here as negative at all. In fact, it opened my eyes on how different we are as people.

Iím curious though how businesses in retail are experiencing this year. For us itís vastly different to other years. Itís almost as-if our customers are planning to leave for holiday at the end if November.
Weíre not sure so we asking as many of our support base as possible.

So far the taps are wide open and we are trying to capitalize as much as possible, even creating a reserve account for what could possibly be a disappointing December.

Maybe, just maybe, we are in for a good festive season revenue wise. Then the malls have done us a favor.

We sure need it. Itís been 21 years since weíve started the business. The last 2 has been the toughest.

Silly Season 2019... what does this mean to you?

This year, for me, it means that for the first time in the last 6 years, I will be home for mine and my wife's birthdays.

I actually get a double bonus as I am home for Christmas and New Year, as we split the 2 between the back to back pairs, and I have had Christmas home for 6 years on the trot.

This year, I was asked to extend my tour that ends November 27th and I agreed to stay until mid December in exchange for returning Jan 10th instead of December 28th.

It will be a real treat to be able to say "Happy Birthday" face to face, this year.
    Cheers,
    John
