    Default Defender Headlight adjustment

    Hi All

Im busy trying to sort out the dismal excuse for headlights on my defender. Ive installed wipac lenses and upgraded to osram globes which helped slightly but still not happy.

Ive set the lights properly for the first time and this did indeed make a noticeable difference. I then bent the bullbar light guard bars slightly in order to lessen the obstruction to the beam which also seemed to help.

My question is would it be worth removing these bars to enable better light spread or should I cough up for a pair of LED Globes?

    Bullbar is frontrunner type.

LED is crap. Go for HID rather.

Or invest in proper spotlights, connected to stay on at all times?

I would redo the wiring of the headlights. At the moment all the power to the lights are going through a plastic fitting with brass connectors in the steering housing.

Rather feed the lights directly from the battery via a series of relays that are energized by the existing wires.

    precisely

2 relays, one for brights, one for dims, nice fat wires straight from the flattery to the relay and then to the lights, nice fat dedicated earths to the chassis.

And mine then got Phillips H4s and the difference was amazing.

There are some custom made cable and relay sets on the market. Think one of them is called the Boomslang? - or something like that. Got mine from a Dutch company - actually connects to the alternator in stead of the battery - which is an even shorter path. On the Puma 2.2 again - just connecting to the alternator already is an exercise in dexterity.

Would it not be a lot easier to use LED glo es as they have a wider working range and draw less current.

I have tried the 4x4 direct harness but the quality let me down on a gravel trip and had to revert back to standard.

Get the latest LED technology then, rather pay a little more.

Those C6 stuff you buy from the Chinashop is really not the answer. They are bad. I hate the H4 light, wish it was never invented......

Be careful of LED, the whiter the light, the less you see and the more eye fatigue.

I fail to see why you need more light. A Defender is hardly a high speed car.

If you need more light on dims, then add flood style driving lamps. 2 x 30W LED wide angle floods would provide a decent spread of light when not on brights.
