Default Please identify - fruit from Botswana

On our trip around Botswana a few weeks ago we bought this fruit (pictured) from a street vendor.
I initially thought they were squash but it turned out to be a (sort of) granadilla - delicious sweet pulp with very large pips.
Anyone know the name, and do they grow in SA?
    Thanks.

We used to pick them in Swaziland and we called them Monkey Oranges. They are a wild fruit. You suck the pips and spit them out, not much pulp on the pips.

    Strycnos Spinosa or Monkey Orange.

The one in picture looks rather overripe.

Old Afrikaners would call them Stampvrugte I think.

Stamvrugte are fruits that traditionally grow on the stems of small shrubs. Stam as in the stem of a shrub, you lose the "p". There are shrubs to be seen in the Johannesburg surrounds on rocky koppies. We used to pick them at Syferfontein in Westonaria

My mates Ouma (old and old school, loved her to bits) used to make jam from the small red fruit. The skins stay a little chewy which imparts a nice texture. Stamvruge Jam on scones beats Strawberry Jam on scones.

Strychnos spinosa aka Monkey Orange, aka Monkey Fruit, aka Natal orange. They grow quite widely in southern Africa including KZN, Limpopo, and the Eastern Cape. I've seen them in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and they reportedly also grow further north all the way up to the equator but I cannot state that as first hand information.

Some of them turn yellow when ripe, while the smaller variety become a lighter green rather than going yellow. A delicious fruit but can make you teeth quite sensitive if you have too many.

You get it in brown as shown, but you get them in yellow as well which have an amazing taste, I have seeds for both now. I do believe you get a third strain as well...

Apparently they grow only round locals houses. The pips has to go thr' a stomach to be able to germinate.

Nope that one is def a "klapper" or monkey orange. some entrepreneurial youngsters pick the green fruit and carve the most beautiful images on it to make a buck or two.

Stam vrugte on the other hand is part of the fig group and are small fruits that grow on the stem of the trees and not as would be expected on the ends of the younger branches
