    Default Weighing a trailer

    Morning Gents.

I need to get a trailer weighed to see whats what. I have had it weighed at a licensing centre for R300 but Id like to experiment a bit more and paying R300 every time seems excessive.

Does anybody know where I can weigh a trailer in centurion/ Pta area for a bit less?

Maybe see if there's a scrap metal place near you. They might be cheaper.

We have a weigh bridge here in Cape Town on the N1 at the Stellenbosch turnoff. Will the traffic department allow it and don't you have one near you?

You can also try Mooiplaats Landfill site which is out of Mimosa Ave close to Sunderland Ridge. They have a scale used for refuse weighing.

It is all very well to have a trailer weighed where a facility is available, but my question is if the authorities will accept a certificate or receipt with the weight on as acceptable, since mass meters surely needs calibration and verification from time to time. I am not sure that scrap dealers will conform to such requirements.

Im with you Poen, the trailer is overweight so I would just like to get an idea of loaded and empty weight and start playing from there.

If he returns the trailer to the same configuration as when it was weighed, and then take it to a scrap dealer he can compare the "official" weight with the other one for a comparison of accuracy as a starting point.

Thanks for all the advise. I ended up having the trailer weighed at Mooiplaats landfill.

How did you do the weighing.

    vehicle and trailer
vehicle alone with trailer hooked (to get towbar weight)
    trailer alone

Hi Russel trailer hooked to vehicle with only trailer wheels on scale. The trailer was pretty balanced so the nose weight on the towball should be minimal. I just needed a rough weight but if you want to do it properly you would need to weighh the trailer on its own. In the past Ive had the landy weighed then hooked the trailer and had them weighed together.

I like the idea of weighing together and then on their own.

A lot of the landfill sites charge by mass, so almost 100% sure they will have to calibrate pretty frequently and can probably give you a certificate?
