Been watching some YouTube videos of Americans doing there weekend “overlanding” trios and got me thinking of doing a day or weekend outing by just using back roads/ gravel roads to a destination. I found an article of a round loop 280km to Parys using the R500. Anyone done it? Anyone know of something similar maybe to clarens or other trips?

Thats a nice initiative!!! Im sure there is ways...someone out there knows sometging
The bikers and MTB guys are good resources for trails/roadtrips off tar. I tried to see recently, if its possible to get from JHB to DBN off tar but not so easy as it requires crossing privately owned land.
There is no such thing as inclement weather, only poor selection of clothing.... or Vehicle

So did you do the route to Paris over the weekend? Would like to know if still as described.

Did the route on Saturday, actually worked out perfectly, turns out it was same day the flower parade was going on in parys.
With regards to the route, was nice, roads are in good condition, nothing hectic just a pleasant route, saw a lot of guinea fowl on the way, also squirrels and I think we spotted a blue crane bird. Farms where nice and green. We took the same route back and spotted some impala, springbok, giraffe and hartiesbees bucks on some of the farms.
Wife enjoyed it, will definitely do it again.
Ah thats awesome, can u give me a specific turn off point at Lenasia to access the gravel road?
You need to take the R558, I just captured the below co-ordinates on google maps and followed it to each point.

Goin to attempt it now, should be interesting expecially after the rainfalls weve had...
This looks oh so much like my kind of route :inlove:
So i attempted it yesterday, it was FUUUUN!!!!! Road was muddy right from start to finish! Drove HL the whole gravel sections. Felt like i was in mini Zambia in rainy season. Saw an opel kadett on the track aswell, must say they had fun also...letting the revs stay high :-)
Couldnt find the impalas and giraffes etcs...but suspect they must be in the bushy area near parys?
Rain started to pour harsh in Parys so we just drowned a draught and head back via freeway.
Want to setup a convoy so we can drive it together sometime? Have a little play/fun. Will upload pictures...excuse my my dirty vehicle :-)
Goofster
Goofster, let me know when you want to do a convoy day drive, then we can take some other routes also in the area that are very sippery when wet, that will add to some more fun. Have been driving the back roads a lot on the area around Parys.
