Default Some pics of my vintage 20M...

Here are a few pics of my 1968/9 Ford 20M V6 2500S Coupe 4spd manual:
I have been requested to share... and I don't know if this is the correct section...

I grew up in this old lady, and it also took me through my "Storm-years" as a young man including varsity - never ever did it let us down - even being misused sometimes as a "bakkie" on the farm!!!
In its day it could reach 125mph, and before I placed it into storage some 15yrs ago - it was still good for an occasional 110-115 mph!!!
It could kill a fully grown German Shepherd at 70mph, take a bump from a VW Kombi and later a 3l Cortina and go through a deep trench in the rain at Koppies dam at night at about 30mph with mud inside the front grill way above the bumper - without damage except a cracked tail-light lens; destroyed number plate and a slightly bent headlight trimming ...

    Some more interesting reading.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_P7

    South Africa
Unusually for a German-designed Ford at the time, the 20M was produced in right hand drive in South Africa, where it was available with a 3.0-litre Essex engine.[5] A version of the 17M was also marketed, fitted with the locally built two-litre Essex V4,[6] as well as one version powered by the Essex 2.5-litre V6.[7]

My RSM in Heidelberg had a spotless 3.0 2 door. Went like the clappers. Killed a Fairmont GT.

My boy on the rear seat - 15yrs ago...
I was 4yrs old when I sat there the 1st time...
Farther bought it 2nd hand with 18000 miles on the odo from Landbou Engineers in Bethlehem - I think in 1970!

Few will believe me - but when the 733i BMW came out - think sometime in the 80's - it couldn't get away from this old 2.5 Ford... It completely destroyed 280SE Benz's!!
The only thing I could break on it - in my student days - was the shock absorbers!! That came from literally flying over Bloemspruit's little "hump bridges" in Bloem - with the Ford fully laden with students...

We had to import front shocks from the UK... The rear I found was the same as some Datsun Laurel's rear shocks.

Once I remember it developed a misfire between Bloem and Bethlehem - but I got home... thought that was it! When we lifted the tappet covers - it was just a nut that came loose on one of the "rockers"!! Cost less than R10 to repair - including tappet cover gaskets!!!

Very nice tread. Always nice to see a classic in mint condition.

Hi, thanks for posting the photos. You do have a beauty and I think it's such a pity that you can not use it at this point.

Our's we bought over from my father-in-law. He bought it new in 1968. By the time we took it over, it had also been standing for quite a few years.

There was a lot of work to do before we got it roadworthy again. We still have the original rims, but had to change due to the nonavailability of the correct tyres. Btw, it does have the Essex V6 engine and originates from the UK.

I grew up in a 1700 17M sedan. My mother's car for 20 years. TV 17123. Pity I never kept and restored it. On a recent classic car magazine of sorts, there was beautifully restored 3000 20M Coupé on the cover. Same colour as ours, the goldenish metallic. The space on the rear bench accommodated three large adults with ease. The front seat was also a bench but with separately adjustable backrests. No head rests, no radio! I cannot remember how we survived long trips . . Oh yes I do: we played cricket. passenger bus was six runs, a truck = four runs, any other car a single, and a beetle meant your wicket is gone, next one in!

    Lol!!
Same here - maybe that cricket game was standard in the 20M's owners manual...
We later fitted a Rally radio!

    @Petri - yes, the 17M was a V4 2.0l ...

My old man had a red one with a vinyl top, was a 2.0 v4 if I recall, which died an early death, so he fitted a worked 3.0 v6.
He had many Fords, race cars : Anglia 1200, Escort (2.0), Formula Ford, then the 20m, Cortina 30s, Granada, Fairlane 500 (used for towing the boat), later a Falcon XR6 too.

I have several old copies of CAR Magazine road tests from the '70's. The Mk3 Cortinas fitted with the 2.5 V6 and four on the floor manual had damn near the same performance as the three-litre versions, but with the C4 auto slushbox they were rather lazy and very thirsty. Why did Ford SA discontinue the 2.5 V6 with the arrival of the Mk4 Cortina in 1977? Surely this would have been the perfect engine for the mid-range sedans and pickups? In manual form those Cortinas could pretty much match the 2.0 I4 pinto on economy as well. My granddad had a Mk3 auto Cortina bakkie with the 2.5, it sounded wonderful!

Ongelukkig geen fotos meer nie. Sy het die kar jare later verkoop vir n R 1000. Wens ek kan die kar besit vandag
