Default Do you have the right? A rant about spineless individuals spreading rumors.

Maybe I am just blowing smoke up my own behind but most of us on this forum doesn't have the slightest idea who the other person is behind a nickname and a picture of his or her vehicle or what he or she does for a living neither do we have the right to judge that person....... but as it is with the world today, everyone feels he or she has the right to belittle or spread rumors about someone he or she had dealings with and was not happy with the outcome for whatever reason.

In our Land Rover world, everyone has a favorite indy that looks after their pride and joy, if you don't do it yourself, like I do. Person A prefers to go to Saltpeter @ Overgland Wors, person B goes to Kniehalter @ WRX, person C believes that Spater @ Slowlimal is the best, the guys down South goes to Mandy @ LBNervous centre..... and so on and so forth. I hope you all get the idea.

Now here comes the problem......person X went to see one of these Indy's or any one of the others, on the advice of a friend or google and he is not totally happy with the service, for whatever the reason is. Hopefully these and other such incidents are handled the appropriate way and gets sorted between the parties involved without having to go and spread falls claims and accusations about the person or business involved on forums or the biggest evil these days, private whatsapp groups. Just read some threads on this forum and you'll see that many see this platform as a way of discrediting someone and many times the person who keeps himself busy with "rumormongering" is the one at fault.

As an example, person X's vehicle doesn't perform as it should. Google tells him to remap the vehicle as it should sort his vehicle out. Vehicle goes to some indy who will install the maps and do all the necessary but find that the injectors are shot and that is why the vehicle is not up to standard. Still, person X is clever and insists that the map should be done as he is not convinced of the faulty injectors as google knows better. Mapping is done and vehicle will obviously not perform as it should since the injectors are faulty. Person X takes his vehicle, drives away and arrives home and starts his or her smear campaign of the person who did work without saying that he or she is actually at fault.

Another scenario, person X posts an engine for sale....."Friscovery 2 V9 engine for sale. R25. Runs great. Selling as I put a Plexus in my Frisco" Many of our indies who work on Landies will jump at the opportunity to buy a good secondhand engine for rebuilding of someones broken vehicle. So Indy Z asks person X on some forum or vleisbook or instapram why would you take out a perfectly good engine and put a completely different brand of engine in there? (I would ask the same question) So instead of being honest about the why, person X now starts telling everyone on his social or anti social groups that ol' Frikkie there at Quarter Inch Land Rover mechanics is a skelm and steals people's money, and overcharges on work etc etc etc..... And as I have discovered on these types of groups, you should not call person X's bluff and ask or inquire from Frikkie who you know personally what really happened...... nee Boet!!!! you get removed and called a "boks" and all sorts of unsavoury afrikaans words.

So, please refrain from spreading rumors about individuals who have spend countless days building up a business and reputation and relies on this reputation to keep their door open and thus provide for themselves, their families and the families of those who depend on them for work.

The sad thing about this incident is the fact that there are members of our biggest Land Rover club on this specific group and not 1 opened his mouth or reprimanded the guilty parties.

And in conclusion, knock yourself out with the name calling....... I am still better at seeing you for who and what you are than you give me credit for.

Spreading rumors and discrediting people is as old as the world itself, the only difference is that with social media the audience is bigger. But I agree wholeheartedly with you, it's uncalled for and childish.
There is an afrikaans saying "hy staan self agter die deur" which means and if you go look is normally spot on, the person that shouts the loudest is normally the quilty party.

Not a nice setup or scenario to be in. Unfortunately a customer or person will instantly run to the media without first sorting out the problem with the mechanic.

I agree Henkus and now and then I get out the blocks a bit quickly without some contemplative thought.

One point is that most of these indies have hundreds of satisfied customers but there is going to be an error now and then. Try resolve it decently rather than going on a rant. It only takes one goat...................

Well I for one will not take my Landy to anyone other the my favourite Indy, I am quite aware that he may make a mistake every now and then but then I'm also quite aware that he would fix that. Besides I've always only received the best service from him and he has saved me a lot of money in the long run, by going the extra mile.

I all honesty would it feel like betrayal to me if I had to even just let someone else peek under the bonnet, never mind work on Garrie

Don't call someone skelm/sly/dishonest etc on social media in whatever form. Do your laundry in private. What you post today can be read by someone like me who actually know how to use the grey matter between my ears and can spot BS from miles away.

And can't agree with you more on the 3 sides quote...... see attached.

    O ja, OK..............

Well , Social Media has its plus and minuses. To me, as a Consumer, or Pospective Buyer etc etc, a useful Tool to check out things before parting with my moolah.

To me, as a Supplier, also a Tool that Consumers can browse at their leisure and make up their minds and get a "feel" for the Supplier before they part with THEIR moolah.

Hell, everybody makes mistakes, the bigger the volumes that are supplied, the more mistakes, usually.

I just think its how you rectify them that matters........another VERY VERY useful marketing tool, that sort out the hassles thing - I also sometimes forget that.

But agree with the OP 200%......unfounded mudslinging etc etc on Socal Media is wrong.

IF unfounded - I think that's the term here. If allegations are facts?? Then the "Publisher" is doing me a favour by keeping me informed.

My opinion anyway, and yes, I also make mistakes as a Supplier - I'd say on a daily basis, we all do. I'm a used car salesman, and EVERY used car has some issue, even if it only has 5 km on the clock. The issue is it has 5km on the odo, not 0.

This part above is the most important to me. We recently bought a bag of dogfood, and after a couple of days I noticed it had mold on it. This is the same brand I have been using for years, and I have been very happy with this brand of dog food. Anyway, I decided to contact them via facebook, and inform them about what happened. They sent a replacement bag within hours. There was a problem with a batch or batches of the food, and in general everyone seemed very happy with the quick response they got from this company. No hassles, no arguing, food replaced, and I even got a little sorry present from them in the form of treats. So sure, they stuffed up, but they rectified it, and went above my expectation to do so, and for that, I will stay a loyal customer of said brand.

    Thats my point Lizard

Its " What's their name, they sound great!!".

WOM was always a big thing.......nowadays, its GIGANTIC.

Again, I also make mistakes, hell by the dozen at a time, we all do.

I had an issue where I felt badly let down by someone. I gave him ample time to rectify but got nowhere. I put the facts on the table, Forum, and he could claim I lied once as I had all the facts and proof. Sometimes this is a warning for people to look twice at using Koos van Klapperkop or so. I had problems with 2 Indies and will never use or recommend them but found other, more reliable people, and recommend them to others. If it was an honest mistake and the person owns up and resolve I would rater go in a forum and say there was a problem but this person then went to trouble to resolve. But this, unfortunately, also does not happen much.

Sometimes, looking at the driving style of an individual, one may think it is a big agressive oak. When he gets out the car, the persons is most cases just another average bloke, and much less "forcefull" than behind the steering wheel

Same with keyboard responses. Easy to manhandle behind a pc, but in person probably just another insecure individual

It is easy to drive your way or type your thing. Speaking to the person you feel has offended you in person, is n bit different.

There is a saying, repremand in private, praise in public. Maybe those typists dont have the guts to face the other person? Maybe we shpukd not give them the acknowledgement they usually get.

    Fact of life

People complain far far more easily than they compliment (by about 10/1)
And as have been stated many times here 3 sides to all stories

These days it is almost an absolute necessity to get everything documented

So you had chat with guy about his car advising that you think the issue might be ... and he should rather do ...
He then decides to not follow advice and proceed with ...

Advise him that you will just be sending him a email to confirm his requirements

Then send him an email stating that you believe the issue is different and he should rather ...

After the fact if Mr B17ch and moaner complains then you have proof that he did not follow your advice and decided against it
The facts will then speak for themselves
