Default DEC trip - West Coast, Cederberg, Tankwa from GP

    Hello All,

Planning a first time trip with trailer down to the WC, down the coast, through Cederberg, Tankwa and back home to GP.

Trip will be mostly unplanned in the form of accommodation and we will be geared for Guest house to Bush-camp. Have a couple of days float and already planning extra days at Augrabies, The Dunes (Christmas), Tankwa. Can add to this if worth it.

    Trip planned:

Day 1, 2 and 11 is mostly tar. The rest is Gravel, Sand and rocks....

Question 1: Places to visit on route or when were there

Question 2: Taking the trailer from Cederberg to Tankwa via Wupertal and Old Postal Route - Have done it a couple of years ago with a loaded 1200gs - Possible with a trailer.? What is the current condition?

Question 3: Places you have to visit when your there...?

Question 4: Taking extra spare wheel and fuel cans for time in Tankwa - What else do i need to consider/allow for?

Did a similar trip in 2017 Dec - 2018 Jan. Wish I had filmed that one but alas.

    1. Kalahari Water in Keimoes is a great stopover to breakup the trip, and relatively close to Augrabies for a day trip if you donít want to stay in Augrabies itself. Have stayed there many times. Nice pool, nice shaded camp sites, generally relatively quiet in the December preiods that we have been there. Mostly used by people as a stopover .
    2. Kleinzee - Stayed at Hout Hoop. Option of camping or a cabin. Camp site is very basic. Cabins are small two bed affairs, but clean and comfortable. Shared kitchen and bathrooms, all very decent. Meals can be had on site if ordered in advance (pricey though).
    3. Namaqua NP: Boulder Bay camp is very nice. See link ( ). Be prepared for the wind. We stayed at Boulder for 3 days and wind was unrelenting, although other Campers said it was only those days. Roads going south along the coast will be very sandy. A couple with a Prado and conqueror got properly stuck and were pulled out by our neighbours. So take care driving south in Namaqua. We heard of a couple of other vehicles getting stuck but canít confirm veracity of this second hand info.
    4. Clan William. Stayed at De Pakhuys in Clan William. Nice spot, has some hikes and was a good stopover before heading through to Tankwa Karoo.
    5. Gravel roads to Tankwa along the route we took were good. Not sure about your route but we followed the R364 from De Pakhuys and turned off about 70km on, this is just before the R364 to Calvinia becomes gravel. The roads were generally good. One dry river crossing with small sand, boulders, steep embankments but shouldnít be a problem even with a trailer.
    6. Stayed at Langkloof in Tankwa.. Langkloof is a really nice site. Quite isolated with only two camping spots adjacent to each other and exclusive bathroom and kitchen for each one, with gas geyser and paraffin lamps, no electricity. The kloof can get windy quite unexpectedly. MUST HAVE SPARE TYRES for Tankwa Karoo the slate stones are sharp and famous for wrecking tyres, I have first hand experience and many people we spoke to there had lost at least a tyre. Seems you have that covered though.

Would recommend you do Bird Island in Lambertís bay. Gannets should be in full force during December-early Jan.

    Hope this is helpful.
