Default FJ 60 - Strange light and Choke behaviour

My FJ 60 has 2 strange thingies. Not a trainsmash, actually hughly entertaining, but needs to be sorted.

    1) If I start it in the morning, I need to use the choke (even in summer). Then I need to drive it for about 2km before it idles (perfectly) with the choke know in again.
?? Carb needs further adjustment, or do I just leave it as is??

    2) This is the entertaining one - If I start it cold at night (as in 1 above), the headlights are off, and only once it's a bit warmer (as above) the lights go on - meaning the lights only work when it idles without choke.

    ??

Alternator seems 100%, battery etc etc all 100%. Idles beautifully, revs nice and "stiff", everything seems fine.

    THANKS

First I've heard of an alternator needing a warm up

I think somebody has pulled a feed off your headlight circuit to activate the choke indicator bulb, instead of a Accessory feed. (I assume the 60 has a light that goes on when the choke is out?)

It is an all cast iron engine they took awhile to warm up so no 1 is normal.

No 2 sounds as wiring problem. Jelo might be right. I have also found that engines with bad earth straps tend to earth through the choke cable.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

    Slim manne - dankie!!!

Forgot to add - the 60 is "wired" that if you turn the ignition off, the main beams go off, only the park lights are on (like in more modern cars).

Dunno if this could cause this??

But yes what you Guys say makes sense (even to me)

Its also only the headlights that need "warming up", tail lights are fine.

jelo the Choke light doesnt come on.........so , what you're saying makes even more sense now, maybe some short or something somewhere.

I would never have guessed that an FJ has a carb & a manually activated choke . I thought those went out of fashion decades ago , we live & learn

Just arrived at work........its actually SO cool, just found out an awesome feature

If the radio comes on, then that's when I can push back the choke knob, that's when all systems are go, it idles perfectly then, etc etc etc.

Anyway thanks again, will have this checked out on Monday, and hopefully we can remove this amazing feature

Update - fiddled around with the carb again on Saturday, I think I got the air/fuel perfect (with Google's help).

It starts much easier now when cold, the choke is almost not needed at all any more.

Lights etc etc came on almost immediately yesterday and today.

I think jelo is right, theres some "correlance" between using the choke and the headlights not working unless it idles without choke.

Will have a look some time

    THANKS
